in a recent column terry pluto notes where the tribe dodged a few bullets with cost cutting trades and releases, but reminds us of the tanking budget:

The Tribe’s payroll peaked at a franchise-high $134 million in 2018, according to Baseball Prospectus. It dropped to $119 million in 2019. For a full 162-game season, it would have been about $85 million in 2020.

Not sure what the final total for 2021 will be, but it looks to be around $60 million or so.

Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Jesus, what a start to the year.

Here's an e-mail by Chris Antonetti sent to Indians employees a few minutes ago.........

Teammates –

We will soon announce that we have agreed to trade Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco to the New York Mets in exchange for 4 players – 2 players that should fill meaningful roles on our 2021 club and 2 minor leaguers to further infuse young talent into our organization – who we’re looking forward to adding to our organization.

Francisco and Carlos have made incalculable contributions both to our organization’s on-field success and within our community during their careers. They have meant so much to us – we have watched them grow up in Cleveland, they have united and inspired our city in immeasurable ways. Francisco’s infectious personality, smile and energy lifted everyone around him, both teammates and fans alike. Carlos contributed tremendous resources to the Cleveland community, while also sharing his personal experience through his courageous battle with leukemia in ways that have helped people through incredible challenges in their lives. We’re incredibly grateful for the time they’ve invested in our organization and our city.

Because of the impact this trade will have on our club, our fan base, our partners, and others, I wanted to provide some to provide some additional context around this decision and our direction.

Trades like today’s are incredibly difficult – frankly emotional and gut-wrenching – but at the same time vital for our success as a franchise. For the better part of the last decade, we have worked collaboratively to assemble a club that’s consistently capable of contending in the postseason while responsibly managing our financial position.

Over the past 8 years, we have reached the postseason 5 times and won more games than any other team in the American League while spending over $800M less than the next-best team. We have accomplished this level of success not despite decisions like this but at least in part because of decisions like this, and we believe we’re positioned to continue to manage against the prolonged, extensive rebuilding cycles that other clubs in markets like ours have experienced.

As we approached this off-season, we expected those decisions to be even harder and even more accelerated than the past. As you all know, the pandemic has wreaked havoc on our industry and presented unprecedented challenges to our business that we knew we needed to address. As you have seen in a number of our trades over the last several years, we have worked to “thread the needle” by supplementing our Big League roster and adding young talent into our player development system. Today’s trade fits those goals by adding Andres Gimenez and Amed Rosario, 2 big league middle infielders, and Josh Wolf and Isaiah Greene, a pair of well-regarded recent top draft picks, while also setting us up to handle the impact of the pandemic in a more manageable and sustainable way.

We were exhaustive in our efforts to find creative solutions to extend Francisco’s time in Cleveland, but ultimately we felt that the resources Francisco’s team indicated would be necessary to commit would’ve been detrimental to our long-term competitiveness. Because Francisco only had 1 year remaining before he reaches free agency, other clubs prioritized Carlos’ inclusion in the deal, and as a result of pairing them together, we were able to maximize the trade return to supplement our competitiveness for 2021 and into the future.

While today’s trade carries with it all sorts of emotions, we believe it is the right one and an essential one for us to make. As we look forward, our ultimate goal of bringing a World Series title to the city of Cleveland while creating a compelling fan experience remains unchanged. That’s also the case with the foundation of our organization – our people, our culture, and our process – and, in times like these, I believe it’s important that we double-down on who we are and what we believe in so that we can grow stronger together.

Mike and I feel that it’s important to elaborate in greater detail with all of you, which we will address in an org-wide Zoom call soon, but I wanted to provide this update to you directly before the trade is announced publicly.

Maybe someday there will be a salary cap in MLB.  Until then, the Indians (or whatever they will be called) will remain as a farm team for the large market teams.

The Indians haven't done much to excite the fan base lately - unless you're all jacked up about the idea of a new team name and mascot in another year.  it's not easy having to accept that you can never keep a superstar in town.  For a while, in the first few years of the Tito regime, I felt like we could really compete with the big markets.  But now -  we're headed towards  one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. Wonder if the Lindor story could've been different had Covid not struck - which hurt smaller markets the most severely.  For anybody out there following the Mets - you can expect big bucks to continue to be spent - new ownership there with very deep pockets.  For Cleveland - our best hope is to emulate  Tampa Bay-  and somehow contend for a championship with a substantially lower payroll.  But there are a lot of questions in that lineup now.

There are questions with coaching also.  With his health issues, one has to wonder how much longer Francona will remain.

The "Cleveland Municipals"??  that's so horribly generic. Municipal Stadium was a fine name for the stadium. But not for a team.  If you want to be generic, why not go with the Cleveland Baseballers or worse, Cleveland Teamers.

"Saucy Brew Works announced Monday it supports the mission to rename the Cleveland Indians the Cleveland Municipals."

These suggested names keep getting worse.  Ugh.

I kinda wish the name change topic had its own thread, so I could avoid it.

municipals is ... not good.

but the cleveland teamers? ... whoa, now that's going to invite the ... memers. 😂

i wish they would just the guardians or the clevelanders (to honor the orchestra) and get it over with.

actually i would still vastly prefer the cleveland first nations, but if they want to walk completely away from native america now ok. i mean while i think its a mistake, i understand since they done goofed it up pretty bad over the years.

Upfront, completely opposed to changing the name

That said how about Cleveland Chapmans

I also would not mind resurrecting the Barons name even though it is so identified with hockey.  In the past some cities had the same team name for different sports.  St Louis Cardinals comes to mind.

I was also thinking of resurrecting the name of a defunct Cleveland team.  In addition to Barons, here are a few more: Pipers, Stokers, Crusaders, Lumberjacks, Nets, Force, Rockers, Gladiators. I don't think Nets would be suitable for a baseball team.  I'm not too fond of Rockers as I've had enough of the Rock n Roll references. I don't recall the name of Cleveland's team in the lingerie football league, but it would probably not be suitable.  Whatever they decide, hopefully it will be a name that will allow for a nice logo and Block C can go away.

Interesting idea - how about the Cleveland Rams, in honor the 1945 NFL champs?  Or the Cleveland Bulldogs, in honor of the 1924 NFL champs?  (Also, how many cities have NFL championships by three different franchises?)

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

speaking of championships, what about naming it after the negro league buckeyes?

no arguing the name!

if no, well there is more where that came from  -- tate stars would be pretty cool!

AFRICAN AMERICAN BASEBALL TEAMS

The city of Cleveland had eleven professional baseball teams in the organized Negro Leagues between 1920 and 1950. Many of these teams only survived for one season in the Negro Leagues because of a number of issues; usually financial problems or disorganization.

Please see individual biographies for more details on each team:

CLEVELAND TATE STARS - 1922 and part of 1923

CLEVELAND BROWNS - 1924

CLEVELAND ELITES - 1926

CLEVELAND HORNETS - 1927

CLEVELAND TIGERS - 1928

CLEVELAND CUBS - 1931 and part of 1932

CLEVELAND STARS - 1932

CLEVELAND GIANTS - 1933

CLEVELAND RED SOX - 1934

CLEVELAND BEARS - 1939-1940

CLEVELAND BUCKEYES - 1942-1950

Black Keys' Drummer Patrick Carney Will Take John Adams' Place in the Bleachers to Drum for the Home Opener

Vinci Grzegorek - Cleveland Scene - Apr. 2, 2021

"When I found out that John Adams wouldn't be able to make Opening Day in Cleveland for the first time in almost fifty years, I reached out to the team," Carney said. "I share John's love of baseball and the Cleveland Indians franchise and drumming for him during the home opener when he can't physically be there feels like a meaningful way to show John the love and respect he deserves. I want to be there for John."

The Dolans surely deserve accolades, and certainly a fair share of criticism too. But I think it's time for them to sell to an owner with deep pockets, and who is committed to keeping the high level of professionalism that has been the hallmark within the organization.

what to do about this years banjo hitting team? ugh. even the extra inning win the day before was a sad day at the plate. anyway tribe gets no hit by a nobody team:

Who could have foreseen this?

A: Everyone.

Team batting average of 195. Look Mendoza, we're almost there!!

I've got to be honest...

I really miss steroids in baseball. These endless low scoring games and lack of superstars just kill interest.

Three-hour games where we see ten total hits and five total runs between both teams are just exhausting, even when we win.

Players seem so anonymous and interchangeable these days. If I were sitting next to Trout and Machado at a pub, I honestly don't think I'd recognize them, even if they called each other by their first AND last names.  Hell does JD Martinez even have a face? I've seen him dozens of times on tv and websites, and still can't describe him.

Speaking of steroids...I once ran into Miguel Tejada and Sammy Sosa after a game at a restaurant in Baltimore. Sosa excitedly pointed at my Tribe hat and so Tejada punched me in the shoulder. It was intended to be playful funny gesture, yet he's just so strong it did kinda hurt lol.

Franmil Reyes out 5-7 weeks with oblique strain.  I hope he doesn't become Pronk II.  Haffner took the Indians to the cleaners with his constant, nagging injuries for the duration of his hefty contract.

^ I was thinking he was done for 2-3 months, so I'll take that. Hopefully Miller can settle into the DH. I'm taking the positive in saying that he looked a little too eager yesterday. The alternative is that he was totally over-matched...

what da?!  whew !!!

oh geez, on his pitching hand of course. and zack was just getting hot. he had a no hitter going against the mariners recently. ugh.

Of course.  If it wasn't for bad luck, the Indians would have no luck at all.

^ Yeah, I got an email about it this morning. We’re STHs, but the site and video it linked to are out in the open, so I don’t think I was getting any insider info.

Lots of talk about Cleveland pride, grit, stoicism etc. Seems to telegraph Guardians to me. There’s nothing in there that would make you mentally leap to Spiders being an on-brand name (thankfully). Buckeyes maybe.

My hovercraft is full of eels

Guardians is a horrible name.  The first thing I think of is a school crossing guard.  Second thing is the National Guard.

I don't like Spiders.  Cleveland already has the Monsters.  We don't need another creepy name.

Buckeyes would cause too much confusion with the team in Columbus.

With names like the Red Sox and the White Sox what if Clevelander's embraced the history of this town by calling the team The Blue Collars?

What about the Cleveland Willows? Makes reference to being the forest city and would prop up a Cleveland landmark that highlights the beauty of our lake and beachfront. Would be pretty easy to shout too...

Personally, I do like Cleveland Spiders, i think it’s bad**s and the throwback is cool and tangible.

I’d be down for Guardians, but Cleveland SC already uses them for branding and it’d be cool for them to make it to MLS (gotta dream big) without changing that. I think some of the younger fans may like the name too with the popularity of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, I think it conjures more of superhero image now.

Honestly not into the Municipals (srry). I think to people not willing to look into the history the teams gonna sound like the Cleveland Civilians or Cleveland Councilors or something.

I'm down for Spiders or Guardians.  Whatever the name is, it will take some getting used to initially but it will become natural over time.  Names that have some link to the city and/or the club's history feel right.

For as long as I live, they will be the Indians.

+1....John Adams and his drum will be completely meaningless.  Has the organization said anything publicly about whether or not the drumming will be allowed to be continued?  People don't think about little things like that.
