Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

Cleveland Indians set to recall infielder Asdrubal Cabrera

Posted by Plain Dealer staff reports July 17, 2008 12:07PM

Chuck Crow/The Plain Dealer

Asdrubal Cabrera will be back with the Indians when they open the second half of the season Friday in Seattle.  The Indians today outrighted infielder Jorge Velandia off the 40-man roster to Class AAA Buffalo. Cabrera will join the Indians for their workout at Progressive Field tonight and accompany them on the trip to Seattle.  Cabrera opened the season as the Indians starter at second base, but was demoted to Buffalo on June 9 after hitting .184 in 52 games. He struck out 40 times and had 14 RBI.  The highlight of his season came on May 12 when he turned just the second regular season unassisted triple play in Indians history.

^ Jhonny to DH, Marte at 3rd, Cabrera at SS, Barfield (when healthy) at 2nd.. exciting lineup..

^If Cabrerra and Barfield can hit, than sure.

Well Barfield will be your prototypical second baseman.. decent average, good speed, small power numbers.  But with him at 2nd and Cabrera at short, you have good defense up the middle.

Peralta is not going anywhere in the nearterm... not saying that's right... just saying there is no way the indians move him for the rest of the year.

Well right now it's not gonna happen because Barfield is injured.  But you think they like Peralta's defense?  Heck no.

I envision him moving to a third/ss/dh role next year.  doing this will provide insurance against marte/hodges not being ready to take over in 2009.

The one benefit of Peralta at SS, assuming there are other decent bats for DH, is the comparative lineup advantage over other teams.  Doesn't say much about the current crop of SS, but Peralta hits a lot more than most.  He's been an xbh machine of late.  I don't have a good sense how bad his D is compared to other SSs though.  I mean he's absurdly slow and his range seems a little...lacking, but is he considered a disaster?

Well right now it's not gonna happen because Barfield is injured. But you think they like Peralta's defense? Heck no.

Like I said, I'm not saying it's right but the indians are pretty vocal about this.  He's not going anywhere (this season anyway).

if you look at things like range factor / dps turned / assists /etc his numbers aren't bad...but maybe some of that can be attributed to the # of ground ball pitchers on the indians

Dodgers send pair of prospects to Indians for Blake

By Jayson Stark - ESPN.com

Updated: July 26, 2008, 4:04 PM ET

The Cleveland Indians traded third baseman/outfielder Casey Blake and cash to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two minor leaguers on Saturday.  "Casey Blake is a gamer," Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said.  "His experience and character will be a plus as we head down the stretch in the final two months of the regular season."

The Indians received minor league catcher Carlos Santana and right-handed pitcher Jon Meloan.  Santana is hitting .323, with 14 homers, for Inland Empire, in the Class A California League.  The hard-throwing Meloan is 5-10, with a 4.97 ERA, at Triple-A Las Vegas -- but has piled up 335 strikeouts in only 262 innings in his minor league career.

Full story at http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3506150

^ They announced that Blake had just been traded last night at Progressive Field.  Nooooooooooooooo :'(.  He was one of my favorites.

I couldn't stand Blake at first because he was so inconsistent, but as he grew more consistent and matured I really grew to like him and how versatile he is.  However, he's not part of their long-term plans and they need to give Marte the rest of the season to see what he's got.  He hit his 3rd HR of the season and his average is slowly climbing.. hopefully he just needs some experience and PT and we'll have our 3B for the next 10 years.

^i hope so...if you prorate his ABs/HR ratio over the course of an entire 500 AB season, he's on pace for 37 dingers....not too shabby...

...i really think he fell into Wedge's doghouse and is only playing now b/c management has forced Wedge's hand

In order to accurately view a players potential, you need to let him know he will be an everyday player for at least a month or two.  Bringing Marte in once a week, than not at all, than twice a week is not a good way to see the full potential.  He comes in on the fly, nervous, not ready, and then sits for 5 days.  Let him try to get in the groove of playing daily, and maybe we can see what he's got.  He needs to know for himself that he will play today, tommorrow and the next day.

I know no one cares anymore, but that was a pretty spectacular bullpen meltdown today.  Very impressive.

The Cleveland Indians and the nonprofit organization that owns Progressive Field have reached a deal that will keep the baseball team here until at least 2023.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANS & RED SOX COMPLETE TRADE

RHP PAUL BYRD Sent to Boston for Player to be Named or Cash

CLEVELAND, OH—The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has completed a trade with the Boston Red Sox, sending RHP PAUL BYRD to Boston in exchange for a player to be named or cash.  The player to be named must be agreed upon on or before January 15, 2009.

Byrd made 22 starts with the Indians this year going 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA (131.0IP, 146H, 70R/66ER, 24BB, 56K, 23HR).

The Indians will not make a move today to replace Byrd on their active 25-man roster. The club’s 40-man roster now stands at 39.  The Indians are now undecided for the start on Thursday, August 14 vs. Baltimore.

barf? Its not like the guy has been performing this year.

He's pitched really well lately, though, Pope.

Don't worry I know how to check the game log statistics.

(man that sounded really snarky, but it wasn't)

Either way, its just a short money saving opportunity, this was Byrd's last year with the Indian's as I recall.

Yes, snarky, and yes, normal for you.  It's all about the Benjamin's this year.

ptbnl could be pedroia according to foxsports.com

that's all this is is a money dump.  Byrd gave us the best chance not to absolutely suck right now.  Personally i would still like to win a couple game before the year is over.  It'd be different if there was someone at AAA we wanted to take a look at who fit in our long term plans but right now there isn't... just a money dump.

and why the f are we so willing to help the redsox out?

^I don't know if he's ready yet for the ML, but the Indians do have a pretty solid SP prospect at AAA, David Huff.  Plus giving Laffey a few more big league starts this year wouldn't be so bad (he just pitched 8 shut out innings in Buf if I recall correctly, so maybe he found his mojo again).  Really, this isn't much of a loss as good as Byrd was pitching post break.

Zero chance of that.

Haha, in our dreams.

For what it's worth; Byrd is a veteran pitcher, proven in the post season, and is the hottest pitcher in the American league since the all-star break ( 4 wins 0 losses, ERA 1.24). I understand that teams need to make moves and if management felt they could improve the team by trading him, then do it, but for F***K sake get something for him. This is worse than the Sabathia trade. JMHO.  :x

The Sabathia trade? We really have no clue if that was a good trade. Looks like we have one of the best, if the not the best, minor league power hitters now in our system. Would we have resigned CC, everyone thinks that we would not have been able to do that.

Sure does s**k to lose him, but let's be realistic. The Bartolo Colon trade was a fantastic trade for the Indians, but everyone hated it in 2002.

^^Your right about the Sabathia trade 3231; my comment was based on early concensus by baseball pundents. When it comes to Byrd however; Boston got the steal. They needed another good arm in the rotation if they're gonna make a run in the post season and they got the hottest arm in the league for nothing. Time will tell with the Sabathia trade, but time won't help the Byrd trade.

man, LaPorta got hella-plunked yesterday.

^scary stuff...

and Sabathia is 8-0 with a 1.60 ERA in 9 starts with the Brew Crew.  5 complete games... and he's hitting!

They said that CC made 130 pitches last night. I've been following his starts and he's routinely throwing over 110 pitches each time out. I remember the playoffs last year--some speculated that CC's poor performance was due to the fact that his arm was overworked during the season.

CC is setting himself up very nicely for a huge contract next year.

yeah, it's surprising that a contender would risk burning a guy out like that.  Is their bullpen that bad?

I don't find it surprising. Ownership probably knows what they are doing, they know they can't afford CC and Sheets, so work the rental to death, and let the next team deal with potential arm problems/fatigue.

just an interesting thought...

10.5 games out of first with 30 games to go...

6 more games v.s. Chicago...6 wins=4.5 games out of first with 24 more games to gain ground

4 more games v.s. Boston...

3 more games v.s. Minnesota...

Chicago plays Boston this weekend...

Have stranger things happened?  :?

Probably not!  Go Tribe!  Gotta love Cleveland sports and the perpetual glimmer of hope that usually stabs you from behind!

^I had this exact same thought yesterday.  GO TRIBE!

They'll miss the playoffs by 0.5 games... but HEY, it'll be exciting!

almost like '05!... :|

As long as either Chicago team doesn't make it to the WS, let alone win it, I'll be happy!
