Very sweet trade.

MGD, how's this for defense (from ESPN.com)?

"In addition, Barfield's .987 fielding percentage -- he had nine errors in 684 total chances -- was third best among NL second basemen. One of the Indians' biggest deficiencies last season was their horrid defense up the middle, which should improve dramatically because of Barfield's speed and range."

Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

now only if jhonny remembers how to take a step to his left!

i immediately digress -- anybody remember that jerky boys one about the firecracker accident? "how big was the firecracker?" "It was, umm, it was about as big as the toilet paper roll. oh boy i really did it this time." you gotta hear that one, that was the funniest one of all.

oh yeah the article:

Jury awards fan $1 million

MATT SUMAN, Morning Journal Writer

CLEVELAND -- Clifton Oliver used to be a Cleveland Indians fan.

Now he's a millionaire.

Oliver, one of two Elyria men awarded $1 million each for being falsely accused of setting off fireworks at Jacobs Field, is vowing to use his money to try to exonerate his friend who was convicted for the incident.

Very sweet trade.

I saw that too...Very nice!  Despite the potential for Kouz to have a great career, I think this could be a good trade for us in the short-term.  We're a little stacked at 3B prospects anyway!

This is likely a step up from Jason Michaels, but I'm not ecstatic about it.  If nothing else, it will push other players to kick it into high gear in attempts to make the starting lineup.  I'd rather see Blake in RF than at 1B and I'd love it if Garko and Marte worked out from day 1 at 1B and 3B, respectively.  Only time will tell, though...

Tribe tabs Dellucci for left field

Veteran agrees to three-year, $11.5 million contract

By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com

CLEVELAND -- One week before the Winter Meetings get underway, the Indians appear to have crossed another item off their offseason to-do list. The club has reached a preliminary agreement with free-agent outfielder David Dellucci on a three-year, $11.5 million contract, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Where's all the bullpen help that we desperately need?

I think they've penned in Jhonny Peralta as our closer...

Well, if you guys are going keep picking up Phillies. What kind of prospects do you have for Tom Gordon (or Pat Burrell)?

Oddly enough, I heard a sportscaster on 1100 last night around midnight talking about how the Tribe should have picked up Kenny Lofton (a free agent) instead of going for someone (Dellucci) who's never really amounted to much over his career.  With Lofton, you know what you're getting: a lifetime .300 hitter who can bat lead-off (move Grady to #3!), steal bases, score runs, play defense, and be a leader in the club house.  Plus, Cleveland LOVES him and he loves Cleveland!

If you doubt that he has anything left in him, check out last year's stats: http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/stats/mlb_individual_stats_player.jsp?playerID=117863

As you can see, I happen to agree with the sportscaster who was preaching this and deriding the decision to drop $4 million a year on a relatively unproven player (Dellucci).  He could turn out to be a great fit, but Lofton would've probably come cheaper and has a proven track record with the Tribe and would've filled the gaps in our lineup much better (IMO).

Could it just be because they don't think they're just one or two pieces away from really competing?  Like, you don't sign a 40-year-old center fielder when you're rebuilding on a multi-year horizon...but a 33-year-old veteran, with playoff experience (including winning a losing in a world series) who hit .292 last year?  Sounds like a guy who can be a key ingredient to a rebuilding cycle...

I think Lofton's arm is nothing more than a wet noodle at this point--it was only average to begin with.  But it's true, his hitting has stayed pretty constant.  With a 40-year old guy like Lofton though, you never know when he'll "hit the wall"; he can't have more than 1 good year left in him.

I'm not sure what we'll get out of Delucci either, but he's at least got upside potential, while with Lofton, there's nowhere to go but down.

Bullpen help!

From www.cleveland.com on 12/2:

Indians acquire two relievers

I'd be surprised if they still go balls to the wall for another closer after this.  The prospect of signing Eric Gagne is particularly enticing, but he's even more of a question mark than Borowski...  I say go for it!

From up here on my hill, I don't see this as getting better through personnel management.

Its like shapiro is banking on ever player getting better this year. I think they tried that in 2006 following the 2005 campaign. Look how that turned out.

Well, they're already talking about Peralta being a one-hit-wonder and they've acknowledged (and addressed) a gap at second base.  We have options at 1st, from veteran (Blake) to newbie (Garko).  The outfield now has more options as well.  3B is a bit of a gamble with the rookie (Marte), but I like that gamble.  The bullpen is already looking a lot stronger.  I don't know...it's always easy to be optimistic in the off season.

I 110% agree with your last sentence.

The Indians haven't spent the most dollars or landed the biggest names, but they have quietly had a very nice offseason so far, augmenting a team that could be very dangerous next season.

<i>I can definitely recommend Spring Training in AZ. I've been going out there for the past 5 five years. It's a great way to shake off the winter blues. http://www.cactusleague.com/</i>

Indians reach spring training agreement

<i>Bob Baum</i>, Associated Press, Dec. 21, 2006 06:31 PM

PHOENIX - The Cleveland Indians are moving back to Arizona for spring training. The Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority approved a funding plan with city officials Tuesday outlining the details of funding for a spring training facility for the Indians in the west Phoenix suburb of Goodyear. The team hopes to play there in the spring of 2009. The Indians trained in Tucson, Ariz., until 1993. Their current spring home is in Winter Haven, Fla.

Goodyear likely to get Cactus League park

Sports authority reworks numbers, says it can fund both SW Valley, Glendale stadiums

<i>Carrie Watters, The Arizona Republic</i>

Dec. 20, 2006 12:00 AM

Goodyear is expected to receive public funding for a spring training facility for the Cleveland Indians this week, although it might be a few million dollars less than requested. The quest for funding was shaping up as a competition between Goodyear and Glendale, which wants to build a facility shared by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox. Larry Landry, chairman of the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority board, said Monday that enough funding exists to push both plans forward, although Goodyear would get funding for a one-team, not a two-team, facility.

Tribe irons out deal to bring in Foulke

Thursday, January 04, 2007

Paul Hoynes, Plain Dealer Reporter

Reliever Keith Foulke and the Indians have come to terms on a one-year deal that will pay him $5 million and $2 million in incentives.

Read more at www.cleveland.com

i don't like the guaranteed amount.

Foulke has been beyond unproductive over the last few years.

Yeah, there's a good chance that $5MM is going right down the drain- but he did show signs off life towards the end of last season and that bullpen market sure is thin...

still when jose mesa can be had for 2.5 Million. (yes i know what that name means to indians fans).

I would take Foulke over Mesa any day of the week.  I know his numbers have not been that great lately but I think you can attribute that to injuries.  Our training staff should be able to work with him to come back successfully from that. How about the possibility of getting Mark Mulder?  I think that would be a great addition to the club.  He is another player coming back from injury but I say he still has some good days ahead of him.

I really haven't been following any Indians commentary this winter (though have read about the Mulder possibility)- what would happen if Mulder was signed?  Six man rotation until it's clear Mulder is healthy and then trade Byrd or Westbrook?

I hear Mulder wouldn't be ready until June, so we'd have a few months to see who was pitching well and who needs an adjustment.  If all goes well, we'll have TOO MANY good starters!  I'd love to have that problem!

Mulder has re-signed with the Cardinals.  No biggie...

So does this mean that Casey Blake moves to 1st base?

well fox sports likes you guys in their preseason power rankings:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/powerRankings

2. Indians A surprise ranking? Perhaps. But the Tribe returns one of the best offenses in baseball and an underrated rotation. As well, the bullpen—the team’s weak point last season—has been significantly upgraded over the winter. Their strong run differential in 2006 also portends a big jump in the standings.

Fox has 4 teams from the AL Central in their top 7.

Ho-lee hell!  Well, if that doesn't just set us up for a disappointing season...  When was the last time we were picked this high to start the year off?  Back in the late-90s?  The AL Central is going to be a power-house again, no doubt about that.  And I believe in the Tribe...I'm just a little shocked that the major media does too!

If you guys want some crazy tomfoolery validity, fox sports picked the tigers to win the AL Central Last year. While technically they didn't, they were pretty much the only major media outlet to pick the tigers to finish above 4th place (with the royals obviously last)

Actually, ESPN picked the Indians as the #1 team after the White Sox won the series. And we all know how well last season went. :)

^oh yeah, forgot about that. And how much hype they gave that first series of the season.

Oh well, i guess this is why they play the games.

go tigers, that is all.

If its in SI - YES!

Sports Illustrated ranked the Indians as the 7th best team in MLB... is that accurate?

Yeah, SI said Cleveland will win the Central, 7th overall. Lose to the Yankees in the divisonal round.

The Washington Post has the Indians 2nd in the AL Central behind Detroit battling with the Yankees for the WC spot. The Reds 3rd in the NL Central, the Pirates last.

Athlon sports has the Indians 4th.

Everything I've read has some combination of Tigers, Indians, White Sox and Twins in different orders. All are agreed the Royals will finish last.

Good way to start the season, beating the White Sux on the road :):

Cleveland 12, Chi White Sox 5

Who saw Michaels's catch yesterday that ended the game?  It was ridiculous!  Tom Hamilton made it sound like Michaels got all clumsy and fell on his ass and then the ball fell into his mitt.  Dude was running all out and caught the ball over his shoulder in the bread basket.  With the wind and the cold and the pressure, not many fielders would've made that catch!  Then Grady mauled him in excitement.  Go Tribe!

Pretty sweet start to the season- but seriously, how useless is Blake in the clutch?  9 runners LOB?  I hope this isn't the Blake of 2005 who hit .085 with 2 outs, RISP.  Has to be among the worst clutch seasons EVER for an everday player.

^^But yeah, that Michaels catch rocked.  Man I love this time of year.

How's the weather up in C-land today?

Are they actually going to get the doubleheader in today?

its around 35 degrees with a light snow/rain. they really shouldn't play today.

If they don't, I can't figure out how they are going to make up these games.

BTW, I haven't seen Cleveland as much on TV here since Carey was on. It's become quite the saga.

I heard they may move the Angels series to LA.

The pictures of those guys making snowmen on the dugout last Friday was classic.

Looks like they called today's games.  Amazing.

^with the amount of snow that we have on the ground, I don't see how they can play anything this week. i hope that they go out to California to play the Angels.

Just thinking how strange this team has been over the past decade..

California Angels

Anaheim Angels

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

Yesterday while watching the Tiger's game, they spoke of yet another canceled indians game. I thought to myself, no big deal (less than one inch of snow on the ground in detroit).

Then I got back to Cleveland last night, and was amazed to see that these guys are even trying to get something going.
