Guardians it is! The font and logo either need some tweaking, or will take a while to grow on me, but the name is a winner.

There were other good options, but I've always though this was the way to go. I'm happy its over. Let's move past it. I'm here for Baseball, and I'm here for Cleveland.

What does Francona have against complete games?

Pretty much every manager in baseball will pull someone with a high pitch count that begins to falter, unless history is involved.

Yeah once he lost the no-no, there was no reason to keep him in. And actually if it were me and there was no-hitter in the picture at all, I would have pulled him after the 7th. His count was already getting up there and they had a big lead.

MLB Tonight guys just said #Indians are scariest sub .500 team in baseball #RollTribe

I hope their about to start their second half of the season run for the division!

Fortunately the Royals just lost four in a row and the Tigers lost three in a row. So now the Tribe is down to 8 games out of first place.

What a difference a week makes:

*Miguel Cabrera out 6 weeks

*KC lost 4 of last 5

*Second wildcard & last place separated by 6.5 games

*Tribe is now only 8 games out of first in AL Central & 3.5 games back in wildcard race

This rotation is just nasty right now. Unfortunately the offense needs to start helping out a bit.

Might be the best rotation in baseball. And the offense is being more patient lately, although the Buc's Locke locked them down yesterdiddy.

Salazar and the Indians go down 5-3 to the Pirates today.  Yesterday they wasted an outstanding 1-run complete game by Anderson while letting a Jeff Locke, a mediocre lefty (ERA 4.55) shut them down, so now they not only blew the series, they've started another losing streak again.  The Indians have one of the best rotation in the MLB, but are being dogged by this pop-gun hitting staff -- ie, in Friday's win, Michael Bourn hit his first RBI ... since May!!  When Michael Brantley struggles, which he is due to a stiff/sore back, this weak hitting offense sputters even though Kipnis is having a career year.

Honestly, if Shaponetti don't finally land a big bat in the off season, preferably from the right side of the plate, they both need to be fired.  Tired of the excuses.  Most every team in the League has a big HR hitter on their staff.  We haven't had one since Travis Hafner's earlier years (2005-6).

^ Expect more of the same offense tonight too as we go against one of the best pitchers in MLB, Dallas Keuchel

Indians three out of four from the first place Astros.

Stat of the day:

In his first four starts, Cody Anderson has pitched 30 1/3 innings, given up 17 hits, 3 walks, 3 ER & has a 0.89 ERA

Nice job of the Fox Sports reporter Andre Knott and his good-natured ragging on Anderson with: "That was your shortest start of your big-league career -- what went wrong?"

Those are historical numbers going back to 1914 or all time, depending on the source.

Hopefully the renovation of the lineup is next for #Indians; scoring runs & winning is a little more important than tearing out empty seats

On behalf on the Indians offense, we're sorry.

A quick search and I think that this will be the biggest score board in the league.  60 x 237 = 14,220.  Seattle currently has the biggest score board at 11,425.  Yeah I know people will complain that we need to spend money on putting a winning team on the field but at least we will be winning in the scoreboard size race!  Size does matter!

Gateway approves $16 million request from Cleveland Indians for new scoreboard for Progressive Field

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The non-profit landlord for Progressive Field on Wednesday approved a $16 million request from the Cleveland Indians for a new scoreboard system that could be financed by taxpayers.

The system would includes a main center-field display measuring 60 feet tall and 237 feet wide — nearly three times the square-footage of the current display, which was installed in 2003.

Indians president Mark Shapiro 'a strong candidate' for Toronto Blue Jays job

During a time in which the Cleveland Indians have gone south in the standings, Tribe president Mark Shapiro reportedly is being recruited by an American League contender to the north.

Shapiro, who has been with the Indians for nearly 24 years, is “a strong candidate” to join the Toronto Blue Jays in a similar role, Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported Thursday night, Aug. 20.

The Blue Jays have been looking for a replacement for president and CEO Paul Beeston since last year. Shapiro was one of several executives linked to the Toronto job in 2014, but Beeston later signed a one-year extension. He is retiring at the end of the 2015 campaign.

When reached by Crain’s on Thursday night, Shapiro declined comment.

President Antonetti.....good god

i don't really want to get into it here, but I'll just register my disagreement.  I think our FO is actually pretty good.

well, well, wellll -- taking 3 out of 4 from the yankees, including beating cc on andy pettite day yesterday? not bad, not bad at all.

i didnt get to yankee stadium unfortunately, but i did see two tribe games at target field in the previous series, including kluber's excellent one hitter, although the twins took that series 2-1. all in all an entertaining road trip week for the indians so far. bring on the cubs!

we wish cc well of course from his injury & hope the big guy heals fast.

Well, at least the team is fun to watch again after dumping the strike-out squad of Moss, Swisher & Bourne. Too bad that move was made too late to keep the Tribe in contention for a wildcard spot...

Losing proposition? Shapiro says Dolans haven't turned a profit during 'a few' Indians seasons

Comments Email Print

August 30, 2015 UPDATED 2 DAYS AGO

By KEVIN KLEPS

The perception is that the Cleveland Indians, who annually have one of the lowest payrolls in Major League Baseball, make millions in profits — thanks to eight-figure checks they receive from television networks and revenue sharing.

The reality, according to team president Mark Shapiro, is that the Tribe's much-maligned ownership has suffered plenty of losses over the years, and any profits the Dolans make go back into the team.

“There are not many people who could steward the process better or differently unless they were willing to take huge losses every year — and they've taken losses quite a few years, including this year,” Shapiro said of the Dolan family. “So I'm not sure what the expectations are, but a lot of times the disappointment has to be focused somewhere. And it tends to get focused disproportionately on them, and I think that's situational and timing more than anything else.”

The timing aspect to which Shapiro is referring is the Dolans' $323 million purchase of the Indians in 2000. The season before the Dolans bought the franchise from Richard Jacobs, the Tribe qualified for the postseason for the fifth consecutive year, and the club's payroll in the first two seasons of the new ownership was among the largest in the game.

What's transpired since — the Browns returning to the NFL, the Indians' payroll ranking and attendance plummeting, and the Tribe winning one playoff series since 2002 — has been well-chronicled.

If they get professionally audited, then maybe I'd believe it. But right now, not for a second.

The reality, according to team president Mark Shapiro

Only 3 games under that long elusive .500 mark...and 4.5GB a playoff spot at the moment. Not that I think that'll happen, but for the first time this season, this team is fun to watch.

Indians owner hires firm to find minority investor

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Indians owner Paul Dolan hired an investment broker several months ago to help him find a minority investor for his franchise.

Dolan secured Allen & Co., a New York-based firm, to search for a minority owner, a team spokesman confirmed Sunday. The New York Post first reported the deal on Saturday.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/indians-owner-hires-firm-minority-investor-180310732--mlb.html?soc_src=mediacontentstory&soc_trk=tw

If you're a minority investor you don't get to make decisions. So the only benefit would be to share in the team's profits. But Shapiro just said the team has a hard time earning a profit. So what's the benefit?

It's official -- Shapiro is leaving to go to Toronto.

Just heard there's rumors that he was in the way of the Dolans bringing in a minority investor.

I guess not making a profit happens when the team's fans have no faith in the ownership of the team, IMO.

^^Operating profit does not include capital appreciation. Sports franchises have sort of a duel nature as operating companies and rare ultra-luxury goods, like a big Monet canvas.

Just heard there's rumors that he was in the way of the Dolans bringing in a minority investor.

How so?

He apparently considered having minority owners as a potential distraction. Even though minority owners don't have decision-making control, they do have a voice and the word is that Shapiro didn't want more people barking in his ear.

just to reiterate for some who have insisted that paul dolan somehow goes it alone with the tribe.

unfortunately the indians remain the odd man out in the dolan's sports franchise related spending and cable tv is tanking.

ah so it was you. so are you still declaring they are not despite what even shapiro says and despite how wealth is handled in general?

^I don't really follow. Larry and Paul (father and son) have been the public face of ownership and held the CEO titles. Did someone claim Paul was pulling all the strings when his father was CEO?

no, its just what shapiro says. the indians are part of a dolan family operation, which includes charles & larry & the rest. thats how wealth works. its all divided up, but it isn't. everything is always a family decision. all wealthy families work like this. tph2 tries to say there is no connection, but that is naive. carmelo needs a new fur coat, the tribe suffers, etc.

The Dolan family seems to sure have a knack for making their fans either apathetic or downright angry.

^^I think you're reading a lot into a reporter's use of "the Dolan family."  Not to mention making weird assumptions about business management. If a Cablevision office printer needs more toner, do you think it comes out of the Knicks' budget?  Barring some sort of crazy cash crisis (*cough* Wilpons), I don't really see why any of the businesses under common ownership would affect each other's operations.  Wouldn't each be operated to maximize its own value? I know the Knicks are among the worst run franchises in pro sports, but given salary caps, I have to think even that team doesn't need constant, ongoing cash infusions from ownership that are so onerous it means raiding other businesses.

FWIW, at the time "the Dolans" purchased the team, Larry said that his brother and Cablevision weren't a part of it (see below), but who knows how forthcoming he was about the management rights of the parties above owner entity.

''I'm the owner,'' he said. ''Myself and four family trusts. My brother is not involved; Cablevision Systems is not involved.'' The family trusts -- of which there are many to benefit the Dolan family -- are believed to be completely separate from any control by Cablevision.

Woah there. When did I say this? I was simply asking if that was the connection you were making because I had never heard that before. But I do highly doubt that Mark was referencing the Charles Dolan clan when talking about the "Dolan Family."

Thanks for the NYT story StrapHanger[/member]. I was looking for that story as I remember Larry saying something to that effect.
