I love all these threads (city halls, Masonic temples, high schools, courthouses, YMCAs, Carnegie libraries).

Of the above, Dayton's is the coolest IMO.

Ink, I believe Mansfield's YMCA is demolished. I love these threads as well, thanks!

I thought so as I have never seen the building. Interestingly, it has a sharp resemblence to Mansfield's Soldier's and Sailor's Monument; maybe they were adjacent.

I went to "magnet school" in the "new" (old) Dayton YMCA when Dayton schools started to desegregate in the mid 70s. It was verrrry old school. The building still had residents and there was a candy counter and newstand in the front lobby.

Also, I'm fascinated by the older Toledo Y building. I noticed the postcard says "Fraternity Row." The modern University of Toledo has no fraternity/sorority row. Could this have actually been by the original location of the university? UT was originally in some buildings in the downtown area (I'm thinking mostly Uptown though). They should have never moved the school. If the university was sandwiched between Downtown and the Old West, it would have been one of the greatest university areas in the country.

I'm not sure, but my original thought was that they were referring to fraternal organizations like the Eagles, Masons, Elks, YMCA, etc. The middle building looks like it might actually say Elks Club.

Come on C-Dawg, you've gotta know that every Toledoan over age 45 refers to UT as TU (or at least it was that way ten years ago). We UT students would just smile and maybe correct them or just cringe as they continually referenced TU and asked questions about it and the like. The switch at the brand level came around the time the state took over, though UHall clearly was all about a UT.

This is a cool thread.  Akron's is my favorite.

The Canton YMCA is in semi-rough condition and has had a bad makeover from a "preservationist".  The YMCA abandoned this downtown location last year and there was talk about it's future.  At one point it was to be sold to Coon restoration to be renovated as apartments.  That has fallen through and there was a whisper that it may be torn down.  Coon restoration is also in charge of renovating the Hotel Onesto into luxury apartments.  Work has stalled at the Onesto and I believe they have had trouble securing loans.

Here are some pictures from google maps.  You can see the top has changed... for the worse I think.

^Kids, this is why drugs are a bad idea.

Sorry, but I do not understand what is so strange about my post.  Why do you feel that a rude comment was in order?

I actually live in the Akron one.  All floors above 5 have been renovated into market-rate apartments by a local development company.  Nice place to live.  The mayor of Akron actually lived here for a short time.

Also, giving directions is generally pretty easy--if you miss this, you're really not paying attention.  I just tell everyone I live in the giant brown brick building from the Ghostbusters movie. 8-)

^ I think he is talking about the bad renovation not the post itself.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.  I can see how that was probably his intent.

I will have to look at my old postcard collection to see if I have any of YMCA's.  I too love Daytons, it is always one of the first buildings I notice coming into town.

I should also add that I believe that the Akron YMCA may be vacating that building for a newer one to be shared with a Summa facility nearby.  I don't know what will happen to the bottom 5 floors of the Canal Square building (the current building), but I think the growing medical complex of Akron Children's and Akron General, which abuts the building, had already been taking up some of the commercial space on the ground floor.  They might see an opportunity there.

oops, double post

It was. Just a joke...whoever did that renovation was high!

Yeah, I was slow to get it.  It can be difficult understanding someones tone without the face to face interaction.  I suppose thats why there are emoticons but I always feel a little corny when I use them.  My first reaction was to completely edit my first post but I didn't want to cause more confusion so I chose to respond with my apology.  And yes, that "restoration" is pretty bad.  It was done by COON restoration which is semi-surprising.  They have also been involved with Tower City, Union Gospel Press, Akron Post Office and other projects that have been much more sensitive.  You can see that they were trying to tie the front entrance into the top on the West wall.... but that does not mean it works.
