Posted January 26, 201015 yr Visited family near Savannah for Christmas and decided to take a brief excursion downtown. January 26, 201015 yr Great pics... I briefly lived about halfway between Savannah and Charleston while growing up, and enjoyed family trips to both cities. They each have their unique brand of Old South charm, but Savannah seems much more successful from an urban planning perspective.

The squares in particular were a stroke of genius by Oglethorpe. As an SC native, I'm partial to (and more familiar with) Charleston, but both have their own unique charm and flavor. I'll take 'em both. ;)
January 26, 201015 yr Have to agree on the Savannah over Charleston thing. For some some reason, Charleston gives me more of a "slaves were traded here" vibe that creeps me out. Savannah is just simply stunning and has a more authentic vibe than Charleston (in my opinion).
January 26, 201015 yr Savannah has a beautiful old city that is just stunning, but you wander a few blocks away from it and you discover the old slaves were traded here portions of the city that will creep you out too. Most of the city is quite poor, the crime is pretty bad, the public transportation is worthless, the summers are unbearable, the bugs can't be controlled, and outside of the areas of the city immediately around the historic center it is pretty sprawly. In my opinion it is a great place to visit for a few days, Charlestown is nothing in comparison, but I wouldn't want to live there again.
January 26, 201015 yr I've never been to Savannah, but it looks nice. I've been to Charleston probably a dozen times, and I really like it. Based on photos I've seen of Savannah and my experiences in Charleston, I think Charleston looks better, but I'd have to visit in person to say for sure. I like the density of Charleston, and the energy created by the retail, restaurants, and the university.

I always remember hearing Outcast referring to this part of town in their songs...

February 1, 201015 yr My dad lives a few miles away, in Midway. That gave us reason to make that long trip down there ourselves. What I remember is all the swampy land, water filled ditches along the roads, and no real parks (outside of city squares), as the land sets so low. I heard they have to truck in dirt for everything they build. My sister loved it, with all the historic buildings and such, but I guess it just wasn't my kind of town. However, River st. and that big bridge on 17 was kinda cool. I would love to visit Charleston.
