Q1 profits rise sharply at Cheviot

The Enquirer • April 24, 2009

http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090424/BIZ01/304240080/1076/BIZ

Cheviot Financial Corp reported first quarter profits more than tripled to $293,000 largely due to lower lending costs from a year ago.

The parent of Cheviot Savings Bank said net interest income rose 15.9 percent to almost $2.5 million, while other income nearly quintupled to $231,000. General, administrative and other costs rose 9.5 percent to almost $2 million and the company set aside $337,000 to cover potential losses on loans, a 28.1 percent increase from the same period last year.

Shares in Cheviot, which has six branches in Hamilton County, closed at $7.31, up 66 cents or 10 percent.

CSC to close West Chester facility, idle 112

Dayton Business Journal, May 8, 2009

Computer Sciences Corp. will close its mail transportation equipment service center in West Chester, the company said in a filing with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The facility, on Meridian Way, is expected to close by July due to the loss of a contract, according to the filing. That will affect 112 jobs, most in the material handing category.

The company said in its filing that the closure might be permanent, but it did not elaborate.

Computer Sciences Corp. (NYSE: CSC), based in Falls Church, Va., has 92,000 employees in 80 countries. The company operates six other mail transportation equipment service centers.

5 hopefuls for every 1 Cincinnati job opening

Business Courier of Cincinnati - by Dan Monk

When Larry Renner lost his job in 1993, he left GE Aircraft Engines on a Friday and landed a new job with PCS Technologies the following Monday.  Two months ago, Renner was laid off by Fidelity Investments. Since then, he has discovered that Cincinnati’s 2009 labor market is light years from 1993.

“It’s a hard pill to swallow,” said Renner, a West Chester resident with 20 years of management experience, including five as vice president of product strategy at the Fidelity campus in Covington.

America's best bargain cities

These metros offer the ideal mix of affordable homes, low unemployment, and decent salaries.

Cincinnati is tied with Indianapolis at #5. Not that I put much stock in these little Forbes stories, but it's never a bad thing to see some good press for the city, along with a nice pic of the Cincy skyline on the Yahoo! front page.

Cincinnati metro jobless rate at 9.4% in May

http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2009/06/29/daily17.html

The Cincinnati-Middletown area was one of three Ohio metropolitan areas with an unemployment rate below 10 percent in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Cincinnati metro posted a 9.4 percent rate, up from 9.1 percent in April. That was topped only by Columbus, with a rate of 8.3 percent, up from 8.2 percent the month before.

Akron also stayed in the single digits, at 9.8 percent, unchanged from April.

Every other Ohio metro area topped 10 percent, with the highest rates in Mansfield and Toledo, both at 13.1 percent. The statewide jobless rate for May was 10.4 percent, compared to 10.2 percent in April, according to the bureau.

In Kentucky, Lexington-Fayette was the only metro area in the single digits, with a rate of 8.3 percent, up from 7.6 percent in April. Louisville-Jefferson County’s rate was 10.2 percent, versus 9.4 percent the month before.

Europe visit helps sell Cincinnati as desirable place to do business

Business Courier of Cincinnati - by Barry “Chip” Wood

For those who think and act strategically, challenging times offer the chance to continue establishing a foundation for growth that can be leveraged when conditions improve. That’s why the Cincinnati USA Partnership continues to aggressively pursue new business investment opportunities for our region through our domestic and international programs.

Recently, I joined the partnership for part of a two-week trip to promote our region to investment prospects in the United Kingdom and France, two of Cincinnati’s most productive foreign markets.

Cheviot IGA closing by end of August

By Kurt Backscheider • [email protected] • July 22, 2009

Peggy Sullivan said she's going to miss being involved in the Cheviot community and greeting her customers by their first names.  She and her husband, Gary, who own the Cheviot IGA, have decided to close the neighborhood grocery store.

"It's sad," said Mrs. Sullivan, who is also president of the Cheviot-Westwood Community Association.  "It's sad for Cheviot, and I feel really sad for all of our longtime customers."  She said she and her husband took over the remaining years of a 20-year lease on the grocery store nine years ago, but have decided not to renew the lease when it expires in October.

Ninety-two of the nation's 100 biggest labor markets, including the Cincinnati area, have lost manufacturing jobs during the past five years.

The cumulative loss for those markets has been 1.17 million manufacturing jobs since 2004, according to an analysis of newly released data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics by Business First in Buffalo, N.Y., a Business Courier sister paper.

GE details Evendale plant revamp

By Mike Boyer • [email protected] • November 6, 2009

EVENDALE - A vision of a world-class, 21st Century manufacturing, engineering and research campus emerging from a World War II-era industrial plant is behind the $200 million revitalization plan for GE Aviation's headquarters.

"This is a new era," said David Joyce, GE Aviation president, at an event Thursday where company, state and local officials revealed the plan. "We're creating the most sophisticated jet engine campus in the world from a 1940s-era facility that doesn't fit the footprint for modern aviation."

Beam Global Spirits & Wine said Tuesday it plans to close its DeKuyper Cordials bottling plant at Paddock Road and Interstate 75 in Carthage in two years and move its operations to two plants in Kentucky

^D'oh

I wonder if this has something to do with the expansion of I-75 through Valley. That whole corridor could really be up for some serious and important redevelopment. This cannot be allowed to turned into a rotting hulk of a building.

No, but it is because they are consolidating their plants and becoming more efficient. The expansion of Interstate 75 won't directly affect the property -- no additional ROW is being considered for that side.

As for a rotting hulk, you do know that the other half of the complex is abandoned or minimally used? :) Climbed all around the other half a while back for fun...

I suppose bourbon should be produced in Kentucky.

Thanks. Yeah, I know the back half is pretty much abandoned and does Cincy such justice as you cross into the city at the nice Paddock Rd. overpass. The city needs to get on top of this and get it redeveloped quickly - especially the already abandoned half.

I suppose bourbon should be produced in Kentucky.

I always assumed they made there liqueurs there (such as DeKuyper, etc.) rather than Bourbon.

That might explain the syrupy smell, but I imagine some of those odors come from Givudan next door.

Yes, the smells come from Givudan.

Cincinnati touted as consumer marketing hub

By David Holthaus, Cincinnati Enquirer | January 28, 2010

The Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber wants Cincinnati to be named an Ohio "Hub of Innovation and Opportunity" in consumer marketing, a designation that could bring state funding and other assistance to expand that industry here.  In his State of the State speech Tuesday, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland announced Ohio's eight largest cities, including Cincinnati, were eligible to apply for the hub status. Designation as a hub city means "We will provide planning money and development assistance to further build connections between industry strengths anchored in the urban core and the surrounding region," Strickland said.

The chamber's economic development arm, the Cincinnati USA Regional Partnership, plans to take the lead in making the application, said Doug Moormann, president of the Partnership.  The effort would build on an existing project to capitalize on the region's consumer marketing expertise at Fortune 500 firms Procter & Gamble, Macy's and Kroger, as well as numerous smaller firms, to create jobs and attract talent.

Keller Williams relocates to historic Columbia Tusculum neighborhood

By Randy A. Simes, Soapbox Cincinnati | February 2, 2010

http://soapboxmedia.com/devnews/0202kellerwilliams.aspx

Keller Williams Realty made the decision to relocate their realty group to Cincinnati's historic Columbia Tusculum neighborhood in late 2009.  Since that time the company has reportedly outpaced other local markets by 30 percent.

The relocation brings Keller Williams Realty to Columbia Square which was developed by Cincinnati-based Al Neyer Inc.  The mixed-use development features 30,000 square feet of retail space, restaurants, and 43,000 square feet of Class A office space that includes 30 executive parking spaces on the first floor of the four story structure.

"When the City partnered with Al Neyer Inc. to develop this project, we were hoping to be able to attract office tenants like Keller Williams Real Estate," said City Manager Milton Dohoney.

The realty group has leased 5,600 square feet of space and becomes the office building's first major tenant.  Inside, the Keller Williams Realty space serves as the home base for 104 agents and 22 permanent agents with dedicated office space.  The new space also serves as a training center for all of Keller Williams Realty's agents in the Cincinnati area.

The City of Cincinnati helped make major improvements, that included new streetscaping, to Columbia Parkway and Delta Avenue when Columbia Square was developed in 2005.  Additionally, the City maintains ownership of the surface parking lot in the center of the development that serves as parking for not only the Columbia Square development, but also the entire Columbia Tusculum business district.

"We can now see the mixed-use development concept at work, with Keller Williams’ 104 real estate professionals supporting the restaurants, fitness facilities, and other service businesses both in Columbia Square and in the surrounding business district," said Dohoney.

Where are they relocating from?

A small office space on Mason Montgomery Road.

I don't like seeing any jobs lost, but it is tough to feel sorry for West Chester.

Bigg's to exit Cincinnati market

Business Courier of Cincinnati

Remke Markets and Supervalu, parent of Bigg’s supermarkets, announced that Remke will purchase six Cincinnati-area Bigg’s stores and their pharmacies, as the chain exits the Cincinnati market.

The remaining five Bigg’s stores will close before the end of June, the two grocery chains said in a Monday news release. Bigg's employs about 1,600 in Greater Cincinnati, according to Courier research.

(...)

This is actually the second time (at least) that Remke's has tried to make a move into Cincinnati. It looks like most of the closures are on the west side or were hypermarkets. They clearly couldn't compete with Meijer and Walmart. The survivors were mostly their recently redone grocery stores. I miss Bigg's here in Columbus.

I'm surprised Union Center is closing. I thought everything in West Chester turned to gold.

Remke is keeping the "real" Westside stores. ;-) I, too enjoy that Remke is sticking it to Mason and West Chester. Colerain and Harrison are too far west for me.

My KY co-workers love Remke. I'll get to find out soon enough. The two Westside stores are barely two/three miles from each other.

Remke will purchase the following bigg’s stores:

* 3240 Highland Ave., Columbia Township.

* 5071 Glencrossing Way, Westwood.

* 5218 Beechmont Ave., Anderson Township.

* 3872 Paxton Ave., Oakley.

* 9600 South Mason-Montgomery Road, Mason.

* 5025 Delhi Road, Delhi Township.

biggs stores closing

* 4450 Eastgate Blvd., Union Township.

* 10501 New Haven Road, Harrison.

* 8340 Colerain Ave. Colerain Township.

* 4824 Union Center Blvd., West Chester.

* 4874 Houston Road, Florence.

I am a huge fan of Cincinnati Bell. I just thought I would state that for all and sundry to see. The folks at The Bell Store in Hyde Park are clever and really know how to please customers. I just wish that CB handled iPhones. Then my life would be perfect, at least my telecommunication life would be perfect.

Remke brings associations of Rumpke. Not good advertising for a place to buy food. :-)
