Apparently the owners of the Chiquita building are being sued by one of the tenants over the new sign. I'm not sure of the details, but it was on the Cincinnati business journal.

^ they're Being sued by the owners of the land upon which the Chiquita building sits, citing the 62 year lease signed in 1985 that prohibits signage on the building.  They're also suing Nielsen & the city of Cincinnati.

The owners of the land (not building) are car dealers who owned an Oldsmobile dealership that was previously on the site. They also own the giant parking lot that covers almost an entire city block at 7th & sycamore and own another large surface lot on 9th. They moved their dealership to Symmes township after leasing the downtown land for the skyscraper.  Columbia Something is the name of their company, hence the original name of the building, the Columbia Center.

^ very interesting thanks for the correct details!

Nielsen’s move to Cincinnati triggers lawsuit over new sign

Premium content from Business Courier by Jon Newberry, Staff Reporter

Date: Friday, March 16, 2012, 6:00am EDT

"Columbia Development Corp., owned by Cincinnati’s Joseph family, has sued Nielsen Co. and the city over a $77,000 sign the global information and media company recently installed high atop the tower, at Fifth and Sycamore streets. Nielsen just moved more than 500 employees from Covington into the 29-story office building. But Columbia, a tenant in the building since it opened in 1984 and owner of the land on which it’s built, wants the sign removed. [...] The site of the Chiquita Center was once the home of Columbia Oldsmobile, a dealership the Josephs moved to Symmes Township in 1982 to make way for the building. Ron Joseph’s father founded the family business; Joseph Auto Group is now the city’s largest by sales, with more than $500 million in annual revenue.

[...]

When the tower was developed in the early 1980s, it was known as Columbia Plaza. It was renamed when the late Carl Lindner, who had acquired control of Chiquita Brands International Inc. But Columbia didn’t sell the site when the tower was developed in 1982. Rather, it entered into a 62-year ground lease with the developer, Prudential Insurance. That ground lease is still in effect, even though the building’s ownership has changed hands. It’s now owned by investors through California-based Triple Net Properties."

^ alright! My memory was pretty damn close to exact.

Very interesting lawsuit.

Announcement at Dunnhumby with Kasich tomorrow at 11:30am

^ Okay and thanks, OCtoCincy!  I think we all know that "the news" could go ANY which way--so let's hold our breath and anticipate the best. (I guess...)

^ I would doubt it would be bad. I think the release I saw said something about about extensive partnership between city & state.

They've already announced they're going there, right?  I assume this is just more details?

Of course its good news.  Assuming Kasich is involved - he isn't going to be if it's bad.

That's right, Kasich shows up anytime somebody gets a job.

That would be an assume skit . . . if Kasich showed up anywhere, anytime someone in Ohio got a job - from the janitor at McDonald's up to the new CEO at Proctor and Gamble

Might be able to sell that one to SNL.

Drug maker Forest Pharmaceuticals heads to Blue Ash

Premium content from Business Courier by Jon Newberry, Staff Reporter

Date: Friday, April 13, 2012, 6:00am EDT - Last Modified: Thursday, April 12, 2012, 11:02am EDT

Forest Pharmaceuticals will shift most of its local operations from Oakley to Blue Ash, where it’s building a 173,000-square-foot drug packaging facility that will open in 2013.

The move will bring 125 jobs to Blue Ash, at the corner of Kenwood Road and Osborne Boulevard, said Judy Clark, Blue Ash’s economic development director. It’s not clear how many, if any, new jobs it will create in the region. Forest Pharmaceuticals is based near St. Louis; it’s a subsidiary of New York-based Forest Laboratories Inc. Forest would provide only limited details about the project.

Forest Pharmaceuticals’ purchase of a 17-acre site on Kenwood Road in Blue Ash was the last large parcel available for development in the city, said Judy Clark, the city’s director of economic development.

Future developments that require more than 10 acres will have to involve redevelopment of previously developed sites and existing buildings, she said.

^or a joint development agreement with the City on airport land.

Why is Ohio not getting any major job announcements? Like the 6000 jobs that Apple is making in Austin?

Ohio has - but is generally not posted here or in other threads. Ohio is now ranked #2 in job creation (up from #48 a few years back) and #1 in the Midwest (Bureau of Labor Statistics, March 2012), and a lot of it is due to the natural gas/oil exploration in eastern Ohio. People are literally flooding what hotels are out there and even going as far as camping so they have a job that is secure. I didn't know about the latter until I picked up a copy of Steubenville's newspaper a few weeks back and was shocked that people were renting RV's just to live in so they could work!

Here is just a list from this area for March that received tax credits:

Pilot Chemical Company of Ohio, City of Middletown (Butler Co.) & City of Sharonville, Pilot Chemical Company of Ohio expects to create 38 full-time positions, generating $2 million in additional annual payroll (and retaining $10.9 million in existing payroll) as a result of the company’s expansion project in the City of Middletown (Butler Co.) and City of Sharonville, Hamilton Co. This project has two project locations within 15 miles of each other. Pilot Chemical Company manufactures and distributes specialty chemicals to household and industrial detergent, personal care, lubricant, oilfield, emulsion polymerization, textile, enhanced oil recovery, metal treatment, and agricultural industries. The TCA approved a 50 percent, six-year tax credit to Pilot Chemical Company of Ohio.

RoundTower Technologies, Inc., City of Blue Ash (Hamilton Co.)

RoundTower Technologies, Inc. expects to create 47 full-time equivalent employees generating $5.1 million in additional payroll (and retaining $4.4 million in existing payroll) as a result of the company’s expansion project in the City of Blue Ash, Hamilton Co. RoundTower Technologies is an IT Solutions Consultant focused on Data Storage and Virtualization. Their core focus is Storage and Virtualization, and they help clients solve their business problems by recommending solutions to help protect, leverage and control their information. The Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved a 50 percent, sevenyear tax credit to RoundTower Technologies, Inc.

Then, there is dunnhumby that is bringing 550 jobs and staying in downtown Cincinnati, the lure of Nielson Media and Omnicare from Covington, and others. In eastern Ohio, it's the construction of a major steel plant (V&M) in Youngstown to produce piping and other items for the drilling industry, a cryogenic processing plant in Cadiz that is a $1 billion investment with 500 construction jobs and <70 permanent jobs, and a proposed second cracker plant in Wheeling, WV (across from Steubenville) that could bring thousands of jobs and hundreds of permanent positions. I mean, Monaca, PA just won out for Shell's cracker plant that is going to bring nearly 10,000 construction jobs and hundreds of permanent positions in a $3.2 billion investment (other sites included West Virginia and Ohio). A $900 million plant in Hanoverton (Columbiaia County) to process natural gas will employ hundreds when it is completed in five years.

Lots of exciting stuff happening in Ohio!

It's not like Apple picked Austin randomly. I believe they located there because they wanted to be close to Intel.

Similar to DunnHumby expanding in Cincinnati because they do work with other Cincinnati-based companies.

Kind of insane when it has made MANY billions in profits and is worth 600 billion itself.

An article from the media pubbing downtown/OTR in Cincy. Page 3 has some interesting stats.

Good news about the Hyatt, that place has looked tired for 20 years!

Stayed there for a night a few years ago when my prior employer had a conference downtown.  It was certainly tired then.

For real! Hopefully this puts the heat on the Hilton, Millennium and Cincinnatian to consider upgrades as well.

I hope they paint the roof yellow to make it look even more like Pac-Man from the air.

New destination signs have gone up between Cincinnati and Dayton on I-75.

^They have I-675/Rt. 35 going northbound as well (I think near Monroe?).

I think Ohio is slowly rolling them out. There is one far east of Columbus on I-70 westbound. The Indy metro has the same kind of signs.

Seems a little redundant in that the Artimis signs always seem to have the travel times on them, too.

They're reportedly working on moving to a same-day delivery model for most goods.  I'm going to be seriously impressed if they pull that off, but many of my Amazon Prime deliveries have already been next-day deliveries, even though the service only promises 2-day shipping.  I know there's a dark side to the breakneck pace of their logistics operation (the frenetic pace of activity inside some of their fulfillment centers has gotten media attention from several outlets), but they remain one of my favorite disruptive innovators out there.  And, of course, 900 jobs is still 900 jobs.

^^ I can get things within 12-18 hours from Prime living in Cincinnati. Really awesome service.

BAE's military production leaving West Chester

"Defense contractor BAE Systems is ending military production at its West Chester plant and will transfer the work to Sealy, Texas, by April. About 160 employees will lose their jobs as a result, beginning in November, the company said this morning.

All commercial armored vehicle, transparent armor and JLTV engineering work will continue in West Chester, BAE said."

I am sad to see any jobs and companies leave the state and the region, but if it had to be someone, I am glad it is West Chester!
