You know something, this project (the Velodrome) and the huge greenhouse/urban gardens development on Kinsman just east of East 55th (taken by jjames0408: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jjames0408/7305348730/#) are some of the most exciting developments on the east side, IMHO. Ironically, they aren't very substantial physically. They aren't made of reinforced concrete, steel girders or even wood-framed brick structures. But are they substantial in terms of their scale and their ability to draw more visitors, attention and investment to their surrounding areas.

Agreed, especially if each are successful.  There is a lot of vacant land in both areas.

meanwhile, a super rich guy wants to build a $40M velodrome in brooklyn and what do people do? what they do best of course. complain -- ha!

Send letters and tell him to build it here. If we can steal the Rock Hall from New York, why not a more elaborate velodrome?
