Posted February 5, 201015 yr It's important to note that this is East Whittier east of Parsons Ave, which is worlds away from the stretch west of Parsons. This stretch serves as the secondary commercial street for Southern Orchards, while the primary one is East Livingston. This is like a short version of Oak Street which I posted not too long ago. Just for the juxtaposition I will compare establishments here to those on the west side of East Whittier. This exemplifies the extremes of how Parsons acts as a dividing line. This is also true of residents of either side who by and large do not venture over to the other side. MAP I started at the east end of the strip and ended just before Parsons. Here you have: There you have: Want to open a business in the Short North, but find it's out of your budget? Hello, East Whittier! Someone forgot to spellcheck. You can see there's a commercial block up ahead, but I omitted that one. Sorry guys, I wasn't about to point my camera at a group of people here. Here you have: There you have: Not many of these here: a bright spot. :? This block of Whittier overlaps with Ganther's Place. Here you have: There you have: Yes, there were a couple of places I could have eaten at, but I had my fill (get it? :P )of the neighborhood and I didn't have time anyway. So you'll have to tell me which is better: The Little Giant Market's sandwiches or Da Corner's grub? I look forward to a full report. ;)
February 5, 201015 yr Da Corner, definately. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
February 5, 201015 yr what's the dividing line between east and west in Columbus, High St? I should know this (but forgot). (never mind, it would have helped to just look at the map you provided ) I had a friend who lived on Whittier just a couple of blocks east of Barcelona, but back then it was an extremely popular old German beer-hall type place called Deibel's, where accordionist and Columbus legend, the late Esther Craw, provided the entertainment (I think that's the same location). http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
February 5, 201015 yr Oh, alright. I'll go there sometime, but you aren't just picking it because it has a great name, right? Sounds like Deibel's was like Schmidt's, which I'm guessing was more commonplace. Sounds like an interesting place that I would have checked out. Actually, I almost lived on Whittier across from the Giant Eagle. There was a 3 bedroom for $725, but the older women who owned it was a no-show for the appointment. I could have lived just a little ways down the street from Da Corner. Darn!

Deibel's was a more rowdy place, with drunken singalongs (à la Esther Craw-- http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2008/02/21/craw_obit.html --apparently she appeared at Schmidt's too). I wish I could remember the address where my friend lived, but it was the entire second floor of a two-story home--a really nice, spacious one-bedroom. I just remember the entrance was on the outside left of the building--an iron fire escape type staircase. I think there was an appliance store virtually across the street. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
February 6, 201015 yr Yet another bumper crop of Columbusite Quality. I look forward to checking out this area by bike once the glaciers retreat. Thanks again!
