Sports Illustrated had a pretty interesting article about this future number draft choice. I found it interesting on how the writer described the environment of NCH and the West End. I always consider NCH a Cincinnati neighborhood not it's own little town. Anyway if you like sports and Cincinnati getting some national ink here's the article.

High School Hoops: Talk of the Town

By George Dohrmann

It is the first Friday of the school year, the night of the opening football game, and the students of North College Hill (Ohio) High will soon slip out of modest brick houses and long stucco apartment complexes and walk to the stadium. O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker will not be among them, at least not yet. They are stealing away in an SUV, heading east and then south, nine miles, to a shabby section of Cincinnati.

Mayo and Walker are juniors at NCH and two of the top five basketball players in their class in the country. As they ride, they work their cellphones, reviewing the latest text messages from college recruiters. They look up occasionally to narrate the route. "As you get closer to downtown, it's a whole new world," Mayo says when the SUV leaves Interstate 75. Walker adds, "When we were here last Friday, we saw one girl go at another with a razor blade."

The writer makes NCH seem like a small town insted of calling it a suburb like it is. that sort of bothered me

I agree with you moonloop that NCH always felt like a city neighborhood, with its gridded streets and inner-ring density. A lot of articles make it sound like Mayberry.

Oh...NCH beat some team 138-34 yesterday.

Mayo headed to Southern Cal

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

November 16, 2006

O.J. Mayo, the former North College Hill basketball star who transferred to Huntington, W.Va., next will play for Southern California.

USC assistant Bob Cantu told the Associated Press the school received a signed letter of intent by fax Wednesday.

"It's the perfect situation," Mayo, a 6-foot-5 guard, told USA Today. "After (football) players like Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart, the school is ready for a player of my caliber."

OAKWOOD?!?!? BASKETBALL!??!

God, that area has changed!

St. Eds is very impressive. Delvin Roe (junior) is a beast.

Wow, looks like Toledo has a lot of basketball talent.

On a unrealated note, my nephew is the heavyweight state champion! But Lakewood St. Ed's kicked ass in the team state finals. Nearly double the point total #2 Moeller.

Cleveland Central Catholic boys basketball team reaps benefits of clean living

Anton Grady throws down monster dunks and swats away opponents' shots.

The 6-8 sophomore doesn't look down, though, on a weekly task of scrubbing the locker room shower walls, the same ones he and his Cleveland Central Catholic teammates painted a deep blue.

Didn't realize how well the Dayton area was represented. Cool.

2008-2009 State Champs:

Division I -- Columbus Northland

Division II -- Akron St. Vincent St. Mary

Division III -- Cleveland Cental Catholic (from Slavic Village neighborhoods FYI)

Dvision IV -- Oak Hill

Wow I didn't know Oak Hill was that good. They were the ones who took my former high school out of the tourneys.

OHSAA Central District Basketball Tournament Games Will Return to Fairgrounds Coliseum this season

"After a 10-year hiatus, postseason high school basketball will return to the Taft Coliseum at the Ohio Expo Center and State Fairgrounds next February and March.

The historic multipurpose arena on the state fairgrounds campus was one of several hosts of the OHSAA basketball state tournament from 1923 until the state tournament moved to St. John Arena in 1958. The fairgrounds coliseum then hosted district and regional tournament contests from 1959 through 2014.

The Taft Coliseum is a 5,000 seat arena that has hosted countless basketball and ice hockey contests, along with hundreds of other events.

Beginning the week of February 17, the OHSAA will place selected girls and boys district and regional tournament games at the Taft Coliseum, which could also host state semifinal games. More information will be released in January."

Four teams from the Columbus metro won last weekend and advanced to play for State Championships this coming weekend!

A little preview of this weekend's championship games:

In the Division 1 Final, Central Ohio is guaranteed a State Championship as two teams from the largest conference in the Columbus metro (the OCC) will battle it out for a State Championship. Both Reynoldsburg and Olentangy Orange will be playing for their first State Championship.

In Division 2, Westerville North will play in their first State Championship game in 31 years. WN is the heavy favorite in this one.

In Division 5, Columbus Academy remains undefeated on the year and advances to their first State Final since 1981

State Championship Schedule:

Division 1

REYNOLDSBURG(26-1) plays OLENTANGY ORANGE(25-2) 3/22/25 (8:30) at UD Arena

Division 2

WESTERVILLE NORTH(24-2) plays MASSILLON PERRY(14-13) 3/21/25 at 7:30 at UD Arena

Division 5

COLUMBUS ACADEMY(28-0) plays CLEVELAND HEIGHTS LUTHERAN EAST(24-4) 3/22/25 at 10:45 at UD Arena

*Also congratulations to the PICKERINGTON CENTRAL girls basketball team. They won the 2025 Division 1 State Championship Saturday night, defeating Cincinnati Princeton 47-44. This is Pick Central's eighth State Championship- which is tied for second most in OHSAA history.

Maysville is also in the State final in D4. Zanesville is part of the Columbus CSA and is pretty closely tied in with Columbus culturally.

I actually went to Maysville's Final Four game against Cin Wyoming at Wittenberg Friday night (because Columbus Academy played in the next game). It was a 2OT thriller! One of the better HS games I have seen in quite some time. (Right up there with Reynoldsburg's 2OT thriller last week against Liberty)

Oh nice. Yea Maysville's run has been pretty wild. This is their second year in a row making the final after losing to Archbishop Alter in last year's D2 state final. The scary thing is I don't think they have any seniors on the team. Most of their main players are juniors, so they should be poised for yet another run next year.

WN could have realistically won the D1 tournament. They were dominant this postseason. I think their closest game in the tournament was a 20 point win.

Also, great win for Maysville yesterday. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them back next season. I think their entire lineup will be coming back.

So it looks like the two best high school basketball teams in the state of Ohio are separated by just a few miles in the northern suburbs of Columbus.

Olentangy beat Reynoldsburg to win the D1 championship, and Westerville dominated Perry to win the D2 championship.

Westerville North most likely would have been in the conversation to make the D1 championship along with Orange had they played in the D1 tournament. Their only two losses of the season were to Orange by 2 points and to St Iggy by 13 points in the beginning of the season. After their loss to St Iggy, they went on to win the all of their remaining games and absolutely dominated in the tournament, winning every game by at least 20 points.

Orange, on the other hand, proved without a doubt to be the best team in the state. Their only two losses this season came to elite out of state competition, and they beat St Iggy twice. St Iggy put up a valiant effort though, taking Orange to OT in both meetings this season.

I was able to make it to Dayton Friday night for Westerville North's game and again Saturday night for the all Central Ohio matchup between OO and RHS.

Unfortunately neither game was overly competitive.

That was the fifth time I was able to catch Westerville North this year and man were they a pleasure to watch. In their championship game Friday night, their suffocating press forced 27 turnovers, including 24 steals! They were beating Perry so bad (+34) midway through the fourth period that they were just one point away from initiating a running clock. They scored 37 points off turnovers and had 33 fast-break points to none for Perry. They finished the tournament with an average margin of victory of 38.3 points per game!

The Saturday night game was a bit of a letdown. I had been to multiple Reynoldsburg games this year and that was as bad as I had seen them play all year. Reynoldsburg had the tallest starting five I have seen in years.

Still nice to see multiple teams from the area bring State Championships home to Central Ohio!
