Cold spring, ny (incorporated 1846, although europeans have lived here since 1677, pop 2k, 0.6 sq mi) is a cute, historic little village set along a scenic stretch of the hudson river about an hour and a half north of nyc.  west point & storm king are across the river. it was named for the town spring because george washington took a drink there and it’s often confused with the town of cold spring harbor out on long island because of a billy joel record.

the village’s famous resident family is g.k. warren, hero of little round top, of gettyburg civil war fame as well as his granddaughter emily warren, who became emily warren roebling, wife of the builder of the brooklyn bridge who famously oversaw its completion.

its also noted for the west point foundry (1818), an early american steel mill which built stuff like early locomotives such as the ‘best friend of charleston (1830),’ a city which ironically was later bombed by parrott guns and ordnance also built at the factory. the foundry’s fame was such that prior to it’s closing in 1911 it was inspected by abraham lincoln and later in ‘from the earth to the moon’ author jules verne had his spaceship ‘columbiad’ built there.

Today cold spring is bedroom commuter and getaway weekender or daytrip village. Enjoy a few threads of great views, main street shoppes, great old homes  and leisurely strolling around town. Bonus metronorth ride shots at the end of part two.

Nice stuff...  Defitively a town wort a vist!

Cute town in a gorgeous setting.

Beautiful.  The hills and the river are really spectacular upsate.

Very stately, well-kept town and the setting doesn't hurt either.

thanks, nice pictures, great sense of history, like many of those towns along the Hudson Valley (only I suspect Cold Spring is one of those places now largely the domain of the well-heeled yuppie class--assuming it still exists! lol)
