Thought I'd start a "Weather" thread. (Please advice if there is already one on here and I will delete if you'd like or if necessary).

 

It's snowing here again in Dayton, OH. Not sure just how much snow we already have.

 

I cleared snow just a while ago and it seems I may as well have not bothered!

 

Lost a member of the church I attend to this stuff. He was out shoveling this past Wednesday and died of a heart attack. He was 82 years old.

 

I don't have a job I have to get to so I am not affected by it too much but I do volunteer at several places so....

 

What is the weather like where you are and how is it affecting you?

It's a beautiful winter day here on the east side of Cleveland. Overcast skies, 29F, and very light winds out of the north.  For me this is light sweater weather, but most folks seem to be clinging to their coats in my neck of the woods.

Well earlier today it was sunny with a bright blue sky in the Williamsport, PA area.  Now it's overcast.  We are due for the storm that is traveling across Ohio, and I think we're supposed to get around 4-6 inches of snow.  Again.

I hate winter with hate as hot as 1000 suns.  I clench my teeth and just put one foot in front of the other trying to get through it but I hate every single day. I hate cold weather, but I hate snow and ice more than I can describe.  If our winters were 100% dry but as cold as they always are, my hate would only be like 50 suns, if that explains it.

 

Today, I almost fell on the ice while carrying my 9 month old baby.  This would have been very, very bad.  And I have pretty good boots too, and was taking tiny, careful steps.  There's just not much you can do on bumpy ice to keep your traction. 

 

My coats are covered with salt from rubbing up against my car while scraping snow off of it.

 

At this point, I just try hard to watch as the days increase in light, that's about the only positive going on.

Cincinnati is in the midst of another 5-9 inches on top of whatever was left from the last few storms that dumped 6 inches each.  I chose the wrong month to sell my 4wd pickup and buy a rear wheel drive Lexus.  It's a constant battle to get out of my driveway, and up the hill I live on that Cincinnati forgets to plow for 3 days after every snowfall.

I heard there was a 40+ car pileup on I-71 near Columbus - yikes!

 

Once again Cleveland's dodging a snowball - we're only supposed to get an inch or so today and slightly more tomorrow. My hometown still has about two feet on the ground and might get 6-8 more inches tonight!

 

As much as I'm not a fan of cold weather, I'd rather live somewhere like Cleveland where the city has the equipment to keep the main streets mostly passable. Sidestreets are another story but so far we haven't been snowbound yet.

Today started with barely-overcast skies (actually looked almost sunny) in Akron.  Been going nowhere but downhill since then, though the flakes haven't started to fall just yet.  They probably will be the time I can respectably get out of here, though.

 

I walk to work.  The only consolation I'm going to have slogging home in this is that it could be worse: I could be driving home in this. :-(

Cleveland's winter has been relatively light IMO.  Not too many below freezing days and we have been skipped over on some of the bigger storms for whatever reason.  I will take this weather every year.

 

I don't "hate" winter.  I like the snow actually.  As a homeowner, I can't help but appreciate all the moisture my grass and shrubbery are taking in about now.  I also am a "light sweater" kind of guy.  My skin and blood are both "thick" so the chill doesn't get to me that much.  What I loathe are two things - slush (especially combined with salt) and grey skies.  We have plenty of both this time of year.  But, hey, it makes me appreciate our beautiful summers that much more :-D

The cold never bothered me until a few years ago - for whatever reason, I became a freezebaby. If it's under 30, I'm wearing thermals. If it's under 20 - I'm wearing thermals *indoors* (and we keep the thermostat at 70F); I just can't shake that chill like I used to (though a generous splash of Kahlua in hot cocoa seems to help!). The hardest part is the first month or so of temps in the 20s, then I slowly adjust but by the time it doesn't faze me, it's spring again.

It's not bad here in NYC at the moment, but Cincinnati's snowstorm is headed this way and will be here tonight into tomorrow.

We maybe have 8 inches of snow on the ground here in NW Ohio, less as you go farther north. The winter has been pretty mild so far, though the recent snow did make it feel much more like winter. I quite like the snow, though, especially because I live in a town where a lot of people walk, and most sidewalks and streets are clean and dry. The snow looks more like a blanket, and I enjoy the crisp, still days.

 

I also appreciate the very mild summers, especially after three months of consistently cold weather.

I love all the seasons we get here in Cleveland (neo/most of Ohio). As for winter, I would rather it snow in terms of feet instead temps staying below 20 for extended periods. I hate wimpy snow. Lets break some records.

that sucks!  Take some advil and have something warm to drink. 

I am rather pissed right now. I cleared my front porch, steps and walkway so the mail carrier can get through, but the damned city as usual- has piled all the snow from the cul-de-sac right in front of the walkway/steps leading up to my house (it sits on a hill).

Now the mail carrier will not be able to get through. It's too much for me to shovel an opening.

I call the street maintenance/snow removal people but I don't think they really give a flip.

I live in Dayton.

I was waiting to pull out onto a main street at about 6:30 this am, and a plow blew by on said main road, covering my car in a slushy mix that froze instantly. I had to get out and scrape my windshield off before I could pull out.

 

Nothin' to be done about it, but it wasn't top of my list to do that early in the morning.  :x

But if it's gonna be cold, it might as well be snowing.

^ I agree.  I especially like that the temps have been relativly low, not too many days above freezing and not for a long time.  Keeps the snow in good condition.  Then again as a skier, and racing at that, my views are probably a bit skewed. 

 

Generally though I beleive that getting through winters in Cleveland makes you appreciate each day when the weather is nice just a little buit more.

I experienced the same thing; past the late twenties, metabolism slows down. I had always been skinny despite eating anything that couldn't outrun me, and rather abruptly I started to gain weight. Along with that, I began to lose my formerly high tolerance for cold and had to really cover up at night in winter, instead of sleeping on top of the covers.

 

Something else entered the picture in the past few years, though. I was wearing thermals and steadily turning up the thermostat until I still couldn't get comfortable with the house at 74 - 75F unless I was doing something physically active.

 

A TSH test showed that my thyroid has retired. I've been working with my doctor to determine the right dose of synthroid, and although I'm still wearing thermals, the thermostat is back down to 70F and I only use the electric blanket to warm up the bed in my unheated bedroom. I can turn it off when I go to bed and stay cozy all night without the annoyance of a boyfriend the rest of the time.

 

The Kahlua in hot cocoa isn't a bad idea; I may try it. I've had good results with Bacardi Gold in hot cocoa, too. After a cup or two, I can look out the window at my once-clean sidewalk getting buried again without feeling a compulsion to dash out to the garage and grab the shovel. Keeps me warm and makes it easier to say, "Ah, screw it!"  :-)

I suggest ice crampons. You can find them at stores that sell workwear for occupations like construction and farming. They're sort of like stretchy rubber sandals or slippers that you pull on over your shoes, and the bottoms have carbide studs similar to the ones in studded snow tires. They really bite into the ice, and you could just about run full-tilt on smooth, wet ice without fear of slipping. Just make sure you slip them off before coming inside, because they'll surely raise heck with hardwood or vinyl floors.

 

Edit: Oh, yeah, and on concrete floors they're like skates, only worse.

My mom just bought those shoe things a couple of months ago.  They're great while outdoors but the minute you are indoors anywhere you have to stop and take them off or you'll fall on your arse immediately; I caught mom's arm while we were walking in to target over the weekend or she would have fallen and broken something, and we were barely inside the door.  I picture trying to carefully walk into a store with them on, carrying my 20 pound baby, and trying not to fall while I get him to the cart and get him strapped in before I can reach down and take them off.  And then I'd have to put them on right next to the door before going outside.  I guess it could be done.  If someone wants to make a lot of money, figure out a way to make shoes that have these cleats in them that you can just reach down and push a button on the side of the boot and bam, out come the cleats, press in again to make them go away.

I don't know if these are the same things RnR and Rob are talking about, but I use these:

and haven't had a problem with slipping while walking on terrazzo or porcelain tile. (I won't walk on a floor with a "soft" surface like wood or vinyl, though)

 

I'm another one who likes snow.  If it's going to be cold and gray, I'd rather have the ground covered with white stuff than frozen mud and road grime.

So the sky today is a very strange bright blue color, and there's this big, bright, yellow thing up there that seems like it's radiating heat.  It all seems kind of familiar but I'm not sure...

Having grown up in Oregon, my favorite self quote is "its not that you miss the sun, its that you forget it even exists".

 

As for the upthread comments about Cleveland being able to deal with the snow, you should see the wonder on the faces of people from down south when they are in town this time of year. My favorite question for them is "How's that inch of snow working out for you now?" :)

This weather is annoying me at this point.  All this snow in Cincy doesn't really bother me that much, everyone tells me "you're from Michigan, you should be used to it" but in Michigan we get enough of it to justify buying a snowblower.  I've never had to shovel as much in my life as in the last three weeks.

 

I think the city has done a decent job clearing it all.  I have been laughing at all the people that clearly only have one car and it's a rear wheel drive (Sorry, Ram)...it only happens a few times a year...but this isn't the weather to have one.

Cold and rainy; I wish it was snowing, or really anything other than what we have at the moment here in Cleveland.

Looks like we're supposed to get a solid week of snow, rain, ice pellets, and God-knows what else here in NYC. I just hope it's cleared up by Sunday, when I'll be driving the length of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in a moving truck.

I always take I-80, I can't stand the Turnpike.  If there's snow on the ground, I could see possibly considering the Turnpike...  I've found it takes basically the same exact amount of time, because I can generally keep a faster pace on 80, because I've never actually seen a cop anywhere on it.

Stay inside Cleveland folks.  Things are starting to get nasty out there.

Well that turned out to be a weak storm.  I almost had my boss convinced he should send us all home around 2 before the storm hit (I told him about the tornadoes, hail, and 90 mph wind gusts that we may be seeing) and now I'm being called The Dramatic Weatherman.  On the plus side, I feel like I may get an offer to be the Action News chief meteorologist.

Well the guys on tv were all like, "we've never seen weather patterns like this!" ..."head for a basement immediately!". It's always funny when they're in the local studio saying that, surrounded by glass. I don't take them seriously until I see a brick fly in their face lol.

I was worried it was going to be like that windstorm we had in the early-mid 90's.  I believe it was sometime around August or October when that storm hit.  It literally picked up a 20x10 shed in my neighbors yard and blew it into our yard.... over a 4 foot fence!

August I believe.  It was still summer break (I was in high school at the time) and I remember huddling in the basement.

I love going sledding at FH Park.  The hill is big, bumpy and fast and not overly crowded like Cain Park.

I like the crowd.  It gives me some targets.

 

But, yes, FH is better.  Much bigger hill.
