There's a debate going on right now on a FB page about too many warnings, etc. It brings up a great point. It seems that the closer the storm s get to a metro area (Columbus Dayton Cincy etc), the more the warnings are posted. Yes, there's more people, of course, but I think some of this might lead to a "cry wolf" syndrome. The Mont. County warning Friday night was totally warranted, as a 4 block area around Wilmington Pike in Kettering had cars flattened from trees, and substantial property damage! But for some areas like Cincinnati, the actual storm didn't really get going until it was past the city, and spun up a brief tornado in Clermont County.

The "dual polarized" radar at Wilmington should be able to make these events easier to warn on. It's not like they don't have the tools. I hope National Weather Service gets their heads out of the sand and realizes there is a need to address this and quick.

I really don't see people freaking out running through the streets for safety when a weather warning is issued.  Also, we need to remember, a warning is when a storm is immenent, and it's most likely going to happen soon.  A watch is when weather conditions are favorable for severe weather, and it could possibly happen.

Can we all stop and appreciate the miraculous turnaround of the weather for the eclipse?    As recently as Friday it was saying rain with maybe some partial clearing. Today was about as good

Is the aurora weather? Anyway, just got back from the lakefront at Voinovich. Very cool and a decent crowd on hand that was growing by the minute.

Everyone is saying that. I don't get it. I don't think there's too many warnings in Columbus. For the most part, they seem to come in handy, at least for me. They were making fun of the over-use of warnings in the "Sh!t people in Columbus Say" video. I wonder if that idea has just went viral from that.

Weather Channel Will Start Naming Winter Storms

by EYDER PERALTA

For a long time now, winter storms that cause significant headaches are named posthumously. Think about the Knickerbocker Storm of 1922, which got its name after it collapsed the roof of the Knickerbocker Theater in Washington, D.C, or the School House Blizzard of 1888, which killed hundreds, including many students making their way to school.

Today, the Weather Channel announced it will be naming winter storms before they impact an area. In its release about the new convention, The Weather Channel says part of the reason winter storms are not named is because there is nothing equivalent to the National Hurricane Center for winter storms.

...

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/10/02/162156615/weather-channel-will-start-naming-winter-storms?ft=1&f=1001&sc=tw&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

So they are making it up as they go since this will be their opinion as opposed to quantifiable standards?  Seems like it will do more harm to the industries reputation in the long run. Is the Weather Channel hurting in the ratings?

Hurricane Sandy or not, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington must be guarded. A powerful image of nature's strength and of man's desire to withstand it to respect and love a fellow human being he has never met....

now they say they are worried about the crane extension n cab falling and bouncing off buildings and around on the street.

unrelated to that,  windows are already breaking below around there due to gusts, etc

there has been zero water traffic on the hudson today, but rumor has it there is one skier or jet skier out there right now.

I just came in and the storm is definitely picking up.  The boys and my nephew didnt have school today.  So they've tagging along with me.  We tried to fly a kite and it was a big joke, but other than that its been uneventful, except for the four of us being thrown out of Central Park.  LOL

The boys love the wind and puddles, but 116 street is like a wind tunnel.  Mr. & Mrs. thing 2 have a ton of branches and leaves on their terrace so Thing 2 put up the plywood from Irene on their windows.

In couple of hours we should really feel the wind and rain.

so i was washing the dishes and heard a big crash outside.

i went out to see what happened with the super.

turns out the front of a small old apt bldg fell off:

On a related note, my friend in Davis, West Virginia is excited. He works at Snowshoe which is now open - up to 10" has already fallen up there and another 2' can be expected. There are 40-60 mph wind gusts and at least a 20 mph constant wind, so there are blizzard conditions, and none of the roads up that way are being plowed or treated.

Crazy. I used to work right across the street from that project while the site was being excavated. I saw an unconfirmed report on twitter that the crane had finally collapsed this evening, but I haven't seen anything about it on any mainstream news sites yet.

These photos out of NYC are crazy.  Seeing cars almost under water on a busy street is just wild.  I have alot of friends there and have been following their updates.

Right now I'm watching the waves of Lake Michigan out my window.  Pretty tall.  They are totally covering the lakefront bike trail.  Any brave cyclists that dares to try will easily die.  It's possible Lake Shore drive is next to close.  Fortunately the only thing we have to worry about is a few cracked bulkheads and maybe some tipped over trash cans.

A friend of mine has immediate family members in South Seaport and showed me this pic, earlier. The last she heard was that their apartment building is flooded to the second floor.

On the bus ride home last night I spotted a couple fish flopping on 90 near the e 55th st pier. We lost power for most of the night but it came back on a few minutes ago. Newsnet5 is saying there's wind damage to the rock hall.

A friend of mine has immediate family members in South Seaport and showed me this pic, earlier. The last she heard was that their apartment building is flooded to the second floor.

Honey, that's a fake picture.  There are several going around.

The best fake picture floating around is the poster from the "Day After Tomorrow" of a giant wave hitting the Statue Of Liberty. Really a movie poster?

Ok, I'll be the first to say it, frickin' smarty pants Al Gore....

Joke. We have a Global Warming thread somewhere if  you want to discuss how Sandy was or wasn't caused/helped along by climate change.

Looks like a work from home day for me and the wife.

Yesterday was my mother's birthday, so she and my sister came over to my condo just off the Gold Coast here in Lakewood to eat Chinese food we had delivered. The delivery driver said it took him extra time to get to me because of all the trees down and traffic lights out. Those conditions occurred in just the hour since my sister arrived at my home from her work downtown.

So she left early to attend a rehearsal for a play she's appearing in. My mother stayed about an hour longer and she was getting concerned because of how strong the winds and rain were. So she left my house about 8:30 pm. The worst of the storm was a still about an hour away.

On her way home, Berea Road was blocked by a fallen tree. She took another route by a West Park car dealership. There was a fire truck with firemen trying to block off Lorain Avenue around some wires down and flashing sparks on the ground. Just then, an electrical transformer came off a utility pole and crashed on the ground next to my mother's car. The electricity transformer was on fire, so my mother drove away quickly! She got home safe and called to tell me about her birthday adventure! My sister also got home safely from practicing for her theater play.

Overnight, the wind and rain were so strong here by the lakefront that they forced water into my building's seventh floor, causing water to flood into the sixth floor. I am on the fifth-floor and I did not have any problems. I could see from my windows that there were many streets and homes around me that had lost electricity. But I never did -- thankfully.

My sister's home in Parma was one of 250,000 Cleveland homes to lose electricity last night. If she does not get her electricity back by this afternoon, she will come here to get warm. But I will never forget the sound of the wind last night -- it was like living next to an airport with the constant sound of "jet engines."

Here is little ol' Lake Erie flexing her muscles yesterday afternoon at Edgewater Park. For those not familiar with the area, the buildings in the background are my Gold Coast neighborhood......

Has I-90 west along the Lakeshore reopened yet? They were making people get off at Eddy Road to avoid the part of the freeway that had waves crashing down on it.

I have not seen any "reopening updates" tweeted by ODOT yet regarding I-90. Several other streets and highway lanes are closed due to high water.

City of Lakewood just tweeted that no bucket trucks will go up to repair broken/downed wires until the winds die down some more.

Here's some awesome video shot last night at Gordon Park by Fox-8, across I-90 from their studios. Is that a fish on the ground behind the reporter in the concluding shot??.....

I don't think the South Street Seaport photo is fake. There was substantial flooding there, based on what friends of mine in NYC said.  I heard water was up to about 6 feet.  See photos in the Daily News feed. http://live.nydailynews.com/Event/Tracking_Hurricane_Sandy_2

This is the earliest first snowfall I can remember in the Cincinnati Metro. I imagine Cleveland has seen snow this early before because of the lake, but does anyone know the last time Cincinnati has seen snow this early in the year?

Edit: Here is some data from NOAA:

http://www.erh.noaa.gov/iln/climo/summaries/earliestsnow.php

Earliest snowfall for Cincinnati ever was October 19.

In 1993 we had 5.9 inches on the same date (October 30).

Average first measurable snowfall is November 29.

Average first inch of snow is December 14.

I remember an October trick-or-treating as a kid when it was snowing, but that might have just been flurries. That wind in Cincinnati and Dayton yesterday and last night was impressive.

If anything, being close to the lake keeps Cleveland warmer in the fall because the water takes longer to cool than the air. On the other hand, the lake keeps Cleveland cooler in the spring for the same reason.

So we still have some leaves on the trees here within a few miles of the lake, or at least we had more until the 60-70 mph gusts blew through here last night. Most of the leaves were off the trees 10 miles inland and farther, as early as 2-3 weeks ago.

^ Yeah I thought about that after I had already edited it once. Decided to leave it.

According to WLWT there was about 1.5" of snow measured "by and observer" in Hillsboro. Also, they say this is only the fifth time since 1916 that snow has fallen in October in the region.

My previous link claimed that there has been measurable snowfall on October 31 once (1993) and it accumulated 0.3 inches.

Sweetie, I'm not saying the area isn't flooded, but that particular picture is a fake.

let use come common sense

[*]Look at the color of the flowers

[*]Why are the lights on if the area is completely flooded?  Lights couldn't be on if water was that high and the rest of the area is in the dark.

[*]It was raining, why is there no rain in that picture?

[*]Power lines were down, in that area so if a person took that picture they would have been electrocuted.

[*]Lastly the only way to get into the SSS and take a picture at that angle would be from the FDR underpass which was closed.

I worked with a guy who loved to tell the story of the Halloween when it snowed. Every year it got deeper & deper. At one point it was up to 6".

Cuyahoga County's Sterling Building in downtown Cleveland evacuated due to safety concerns

CLEVELAND - Cuyahoga County is evacuating one of its downtown Cleveland buildings due to safety concerns after one of the walls appears to be buckling.

County Executive Ed FitzGerald said employees in the Sterling Building at 1255 Euclid Ave. noticed the wall bowing out at about 11 a.m. Tuesday and pulled the fire alarm to get everyone out of the building as a precaution.

The building hosts the Cuyahoga Emergency Communications System and 911 service. FitzGerald said the calls were transferred seamlessly to a backup location -- and no service was disrupted.

It's not clear yet what caused the damage to the building, but emergency crews said it could be because of the severe weather from Hurricane Sandy.

Yes, but that was in addition to the 5.9 inches on October 30th.  I remember trick or treating that year through the snow.  I was a dragon and my tail drug through the snow as I walked.

It significantly snowed in Oxford, OH in October of 1990.  I remember it was a three day weekend too, so I'm guessing late teens to early 20's on the date.  I also remember getting a speeding ticket at that time as well....grrrrr.
