Can we all stop and appreciate the miraculous turnaround of the weather for the eclipse?    As recently as Friday it was saying rain with maybe some partial clearing. Today was about as good

Is the aurora weather? Anyway, just got back from the lakefront at Voinovich. Very cool and a decent crowd on hand that was growing by the minute.

Non-stop weird weather here in Chiberia.  We've seen -15 temps, thundersnow, most dense fog I've ever seen, now warm temps, and very gusty winds.

All this snow melt creates a very dangerous situation.  The Chicago and DesPlaines rivers are notorious for flooding and damaged hundreds of homes on the northside of the city last year.

Turnpike Closed: 2 Killed, Trooper Hurt in Multiple Crashes

ERIE COUNTY, Ohio — Two people were killed and a trooper was seriously injured in a series of crashes that closed a portion of the Ohio Turnpike in Erie County Wednesday.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a trooper was investigating a crash in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike near the 120th and 130th mile markers at about 1:25 p.m.

At around 2:50 p.m., another crash occurred, pinning the trooper between two vehicles. He sustained serious injuries to his legs and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Police say the crash was nearly one mile in length between both the 102 and 103 mile markers. Nearly 25 to 30 vehicles, including several semis, were involved. Two people died in the crashes, according to police.

EDIT: Word is there is a massive pile-up at the west end of the Shoreway where it turns into Clifton. There has been very heavy snow, strong winds and whiteout conditions here along the lake. The view here in Lakewood near the Gold Coast a few minutes ago....

I was scheduled to be in Toledo at 8:00 this morning. It was a mess on the turnpike around Sandusky even then. The snow line sat there for hours before slowly making its way east. I turned at about 8:15 at the Fremont exit and made it back to Lakewood around 10:00. I saw at least 3 Jacknifed trucks on my there and back.Toledo was in a level 3 emergency by the time I cancelled, the local people didn't even make it in.

Both my busses were on time on the way home. I was a little colder than usual, but wasn't later than usual.

This was my commute yesterday.

Well.... at least they were Rebel Snowspeeders and not Tie Fighters

So this was Lakewood two days ago during the blizzard after which temperatures fell to 8 degrees:

And this was today. It was sunny, 58 degrees, snow was mostly gone. Welcome to March in Cleveland!

<TANGENT> My favorite part of winter is seeing which cars in my neighborhood have never moved. It was pretty easy to spot the car buried under three feet of snow that clearly wasn't working. Makes me wonder how many cars out there aren't really operational at all. </TANGENT>

I always say March is the bipolar month, one minute its spring, the next its January all over again.

The NWS reported that a foot of snow has fallen in and around Mentor today.  Still snowing there.

I sure wish the Buffalo-Miami game tonight was being played in Buffalo rather than Miami, as I'll be sitting comfortably on my sofa to watch it. :)

My parents live in Marquette, Michigan. These are pictures from Tuesday night where 36.5 inches fell in ~48 hours. The record for snowfall in any month in Cincinnati by comparison is about 30 inches. This fell in two days in November. Not normal even for UP standards, but impressive. Here are some pictures of the snow and the "snow plow" their friend used to clear the driveway Tuesday night.

I could never live in a place that gets that much snow in mid November.  We had a couple flurries yesterday in Cincy and that was enough to piss me off.  I don't know how you Clevelanders deal with it.

I could never live in a place that gets that much snow in mid November.  We had a couple flurries yesterday in Cincy and that was enough to piss me off.  I don't know how you Clevelanders deal with it.

You get used to it. I actually kind of like it (at least until January, then I'm over it).  I don't mind the snow, just bitter cold and gray skies.  My only complaint is I could've used one more nice weekend to finish leaf clean up.  I have a Bernese Mountain Dog and she couldn't be happier today.

Same way you deal with that Ohio Valley heat/humidity.  Your skin thickens up and you grow more accustomed to it.  But we certainly got nowhere near 36 inches.  I can't remember ever getting that much snowfall at once.  Although our snow is more steady due to the lake effect, We typically don't get those huge Nor'easter type storms which cause more than a foot of snow to drop.  Usually, it is no more than 2-6 inches at a time.  A big snowstorm in November is also somewhat rare.  Last year, we got a really rare one in October before the leaves fell and that was devastating due to the damage it caused.  But a lot of winters, we don't get a significant snow until closer to x-mas.  January and February are the months that we get most of our snow.

As annoying as it might be to some, I have kids, so it is not depressing for me at all seeing all the fun they have.  My son just told me yesterday when it snowed that Winter is his favorite season.

I don't really mind the cold of winter. Just get a good coat and wear enough layers and you're good to go.  I hate the snow and ice because it's such a pain to walk through and is really dangerous to drive in.  Last year we had a snow/ice storm followed by something like 2.5 weeks of temps that never broke ~20 degrees.  The walk to work from the parking garage everyday required climbing the mounds of snow and ice that built up near crosswalks and shuffling your feat over the ice on the sidewalk because regular steps gave a greater chance of falling.  When the temps rose above 32, there was all the slush and black snow that lingered for a week or so, meaning every single day when I got to work my feet would be soaked and freezing.  My car spun out 3 times last winter (extreme hills + older car = scary as hell commute), and I almost got hit in a crosswalk by a car that skidded through an intersection.  I also have to park on the street, meaning anytime there was a snowstorm, I would have to dig my car out of the plow pile.  ugh.  Last winter was the first I'd ever experienced that truly caused me to detest winter.

So while it's uncomfortable to walk in the heat of summer, it sure doesn't have all the other shit that winter brings.  Combined with the preponderance of grey days, I just find the season miserable. At least you guys have a somewhat functioning transit system, though.  You can probably get by without driving as much.

^Cities that get more snow are a LOT better at clearing it.  People who regularly drive in the snow are also a lot better at it.  Remember Atlanta last year?  That snow-pocalypse they got which shut down the whole City is just 'a mild dusting' for Geauga County.

I stay fairly active in the winter, or at least try to.  The heat (especially when combined with high humidity) just saps me.  I really upgraded my winter wardrobe last year with quality base layers, several pairs of insulated work-type pants (the Lee/Wrangler store at the Lodi outlet malls is a great place to find those, BTW), and snow pants for when it really gets extreme or the kids want to go sledding.  A friend of mine who regularly works outside also gave me a pair of 'Mickey Mouse boots' so my feet stay super dry and warm.  I highly recommend investing in a pair of those.

I have a Bernese Mountain Dog and she couldn't be happier today.

My shepherd/mastiff mix was like a kid in a candy store yesterday.  He would take this weather 365 days out of the year if he had his choice.

I hate winter and snow and cold so, so much, but I've tried very hard not to put that on my kid. When I picked him up from school yesterday, I wish I could have videotaped the joyous, infectious laughter he had catching it on his tongue, sliding through it and touching it with bare hands on the way back to the car. His joy gave me joy. After 44 years of living here, I just try to ignore it. It's the best I can do. I will never love it, but at least now I know what to expect and I try to plan accordingly. I knew today's commute would be long and horrible and so I didn't drink my coffee on the way to work, which took twice as long, as I didn't want to be stuck in my car having to go to the bathroom. It only really bothers me when it makes me late to pick up my kid, which, depending on how late I am, can cost me money every 15 minutes. Sometimes it doesn't matter how early you leave or what route you take, you can't overcome the traffic problems, and that's very frustrating. I try hard to just tune it out.

I do offer to go out and play in the snow with the kid, but he doesn't want to do that much, which is fine by me. Obligatory snowman building, sure, maybe some sledding this year, but that will be with his Dad. I hate it. Hate.

I hate the cold, so I hated last year more than I liked it. We didn't have real big snow storms so there wasn't much to enjoy.

I love the snow. Then again I haven't shoveled a driveway since 1993 and my car is kept in a heated underground garage where it stays for most of the winter except for short trips on dry-road days to the grocery store or visit mom out in the suburbs. So those things make it easier for me to enjoy the snow. If I had to clear a driveway, clean my car, drive to work in it every day, etc. I would get sick of snow REAL fast. That said, by late February I'm getting tired of the snow unless we get an historic storm, then I'll enjoy mother nature's great theater. I love when mother nature flexes her muscles and reminds humans how small they are.

I can't stand heat and humidity. It feels like I'm being smothered or choked to death. There weren't too many days like that this past summer, but summer 2013 was awful.

I don't need sunshine. Some people get real bummed out if it's cloudy a lot. Not me. I don't notice it one way or another.

BTW, for those living within walking distance of the Rapid, this is what their commute looked like this morning. They had sNOw problem at all this AM! :)

I agree with KJP, that winter is a lot easier to deal with when you don't have to drive.  But, I don't even mind the cold, until it gets down to around 5 or so.  I have a full length wool overcoat, scarves, gloves, and a knit hat, for when it gets really cold.  In the past, I hated walking on snow and ice, but then my aunt got me a pair of these for Christmas, http://www.amazon.com/Due-North-Everyday-Ice-Creepers/dp/B00E3KM6U0 and even that isn't much of a problem anymore.

Thats because we live in great buildings.  As a kid I had to shovel snow in winter (and cut the lawn/hedges in Summer) and we have a huge lawn.  That is why I bought a Condo.  I don't want to do any of those things.

However, unlike you, I love the heat and humidity.  I guess its the Caribbean blood!

I'm lucky to have the train at the front door!  I feel sorry for people that actually have to walk, drive or take a bus to the train.

I totally ate it yesterday, in front of a bus stop full of people no less.  Granite curbs are attractive, but slippery.  And especially where they slop down into ADA curb ramps.  I may have to look into a pair of those things.

Cincinnati is awful at clearing snow, but it usually helps that it melts pretty quickly. Last year was the first winter in awhile where we had multiple weeks with below freezing temperatures, and multiple snowfalls. I live on a narrow, dead end, steeply sloping street and the only way the snow gets cleared is when a neighbor and myself get out there with shovels and clear some tire tracks out. I just take the bus instead of trying to get my rear wheel drive shitbox to move, but my girlfriend has to get out to a suburban office so I end up having to dig her out of the snow anyway.

The cold, very dry air is what bothers me the most. The nights when it's 0, a bit windy, and there's not a cloud in the sky are brutal.

Living in Cleveland with the 'lake effect' is the price you pay for having a huge body of water at your doorstep. I can't imagine not living near a great lake or an ocean, the trade off is simple for me.  For an average of an extra 20 inches of snow more than some river city gets I get the benefit of having access to something that brings us commerce, recreation and beautiful sunsets. Looking out across the lake is mesmerizing, walking the shore on a summer day, exploring the islands, knowing that there's another country on the other side is why I put up with the extra snow. Yeah we've had few bad days but it's looking good today.

Snow is beautiful when you don't have to drive in it!
