Is the aurora weather? Anyway, just got back from the lakefront at Voinovich. Very cool and a decent crowd on hand that was growing by the minute.

Today is supposed to be the coldest day (based on average temp) in Cleveland history.  One of those things you can tell your grandkids you experienced I suppose....

I was outside at 6am the night in 1994 when it went down to -24 in Cincinnati.  It was so cold that you felt hot.

There is a lot of range in how it actually "feels" when temperatures get from 0 down to -10.  Some -5 mornings feel much colder than others.

During last year's polar vortex, we reached a 'feel' of -37.  I bundled up and stood outside for 5-10 minutes just to experience what it is like to be in the north pole.

I too remember the 1994 cold spell. I was living in Charlotte, NC at the time and had to catch a plane from Charlotte to Cleveland to attend a 50th B-day celebration for my sister. It was around Jan 25th of that year when I flew out of Charlotte. When I left my home to go to the airport in Charlotte the temperature was in the negative digits and I was flying north. I thought at the time I was crazy for going from -5 below to -15/-20 in Cleveland. But I love my sister and or course wanted to be there for her to celebrate the BIG 50 at the time.

I'm getting kind of use to these below temperatures (NOT), as for the last 3 winters I have spent a lot of time in NE, and IA where it gets even colder on average than it does here in the CLE.

Wind or sunlight can really affect how temperatures feel when you start getting into subzeros. -5 on a calm, bright, sunny day doesn't seem so bad, but at night or on a cloudy, windy day it is very cold. Snow can make it feel warmer too, if it's reflecting sunlight back up toward you.

It's odd how the really cold days often have clear(er) skies.  I wonder if an overcast might somehow hold in some of the heat.

One of the only days where the "throw a boiling cup of water in the air" trick actually worked.

Also subtly dramatic sunsets.  I'm sure those in the artic are treated to some pretty amazing sights, if they ever venture out of their igloos.

Yes. The weather forecasters talk a lot about that down here.

It's a high pressure system, as far as I know. The same kind that make those spectacular 70 degree clear days in early or late summer.

Also extremely cold air masses like that don't have the capacity to hold moisture, so, yeah. Death.

I'm surprised you've never heard of this before. Yes, clouds do hold the less-dense/lighter warmer air closer to the ground. Also wind keeps the temps from dropping. The coldest areas are in the valleys and lowlands, like the hollows near Mansfield, where the heavier, cold air sinks and settles. You get a clear night and no wind the and relatively warmer air rises up into the atmosphere, never to be heard from again!

Oh, more on the difference between north and south.....

last winter was a record setter for days below freezing.  I'm wondering how this year is shaping up by comparison.

-17 in my car this am. :-(

next week doesn't look a whole lot better.  Could easily be looking at snow on St. Patty's day here in NE Ohio

^Yep looks like more of the same. Luckily living here as quick as we can get hit with an arctic air mass we can get hit with more tropical air off the gulf... I hope that happens asap. 42 in Miami, FL this morning.

I think you might be looking at C not F. Though there are records being set all up and down the eastern half of the country. I have a construction project in Florida and it's chaos right now because it's in the 20s and no one wants to go outside there.

ok, thanks. Best of luck with the project. Hopefully setbacks won't be significant.

Today is the last day of below-freezing highs in Cleveland for a while. What's amazing is that if we don't get anymore snow this season, it will be a normal winter snow-wise for us. Why? Well, we had only one day with measurable snow in December, but November, January and February were cold and snowy. We got nothing from this last storm that hit Cincinnati and points south. The opposite of December, there were only five days in February when no snow fell in Cleveland.

Here is Cleveland's winter snowfall so far (as measured at Hopkins International Airport):

November - 19.5 inches

December - 0.9 inches

January - 15.1 inches

February - 24.6 inches

March - ? ? ?

April - ? ? ?

TOTAL 60.1 inches

So we're at our normal snowfall for the winter with March and April still to go. We normally get 20 inches of snow total between March and April.

As you can tell, I'm a weather geek. :)

It just never got a chance to melt. I don't think I have seen the grass since the  first week of January.  I've got over 2 months of dog mines lurking under the snow in the backyard, just waiting for me.....

Was just out back surveying the same.  I'm ready for the melt...but not looking forward to that task!

Agreed. The cold caused the snow to keep piling on top of itself. I stuck a yard stick in it the other day and it was 13 inches deep.... Even though we never got 13 inches in one snowfall. The snow might not have been that far from normal, but this cold certainly has

If you were thinking about walking to Canada, your window has closed as the ice has opened....

The crappy winter just won't let go of the Northeast (including NEO, of course). Temperatures in Ohio, 3/31:

Cleveland: 34

Canton: 56

Cinci: 67

Minneapolis: 57

I heard something along the lines of our of the last 40 days 35 have had rain. It has been wet for over a month straight now. And when the rain stops it has been so ungodly humid it might as well just still be raining.

I'm just a bit over the rain.

Yeah, we had 7.33 inches of rain in June, about 3 inches more than average. For July we are up to 2.94 inches already (not counting today - 1 to 2 inches is expected today). The average for July is just over 4 inches.

On a related note, my small garden is already filled with more tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers than I can possibly eat. I've never seen plants get this big so early in the summer.

On a drive out in western Hamilton County right before the Independence Day holiday I noticed the corn was at least 6 foot tall.  I always thought it was "knee high by Fourth of July".  So, yes, the rain is good for the crops this year.

Look at what the rain has done to gardens on Lakewood's Gold Coast!

On July 14 (Tuesday), this is Route 306 under the new US 422 in Bainbridge Township, Geauga County just east of Cleveland. I have NEVER seen it like this and I lived in that area from 1978 to 1993 and worked out there until the early 2000s.

Yeah, the storm was just south and west of downtown and never really hit the city itself. The view was amazing, though, and thunder literally shook my house a few times. In hindsight, I should have gotten my camera out.

Weekends like this remind me why I moved back home. Can't deal with this mugginess day after day over the summer
