Can we all stop and appreciate the miraculous turnaround of the weather for the eclipse?    As recently as Friday it was saying rain with maybe some partial clearing. Today was about as good

Is the aurora weather? Anyway, just got back from the lakefront at Voinovich. Very cool and a decent crowd on hand that was growing by the minute.

nothing like an ice water bath, a freezing apt and shaving in the dark -- back to work today

I was providing similar services at my condo. All around my condo building were streets without power. My mother's house lost power for a day so she came over to watch storm coverage on the news. My sister lost power for three days. She brought all her frozen food over to my house and charged her phone and laptop here, while playing Dragon Age and watching TV too each evening. She is the last of the world-class multi-taskers!

Lakewood suffered much damage, being so close to the lake. Several years ago we had a wicked thunderstorm with strong down-drafts and hail. Superstorm Sandy produced more damage here because it lasted much longer even though the wind gusts were about the same, in the 60-70 mph range. We still have some traffic lights out in Lakewood, and clean up crews are still out cutting up downed trees, replacing shattered utility poles and fixing structural damage. Otherwise things should pretty much be back to normal by the end of this weekend.

^ ha i wish i had the power. they say tomorrow. but then they say up to nine more days? who knows??

sandy wasnt about wind speeds, it was only a category one hurricane and just barely that and it really did not even rain much here, but it was mostly about the massive size that sustained the storm and all this wide flooding damage across the ny tri-state.

however, there certainly is wind damage for an astoundingly wide range, all my relatives in and around cle from collinwood to lorain certainly have trees down and storm damage. what a storm. so let the conspiracies begin -- global warming or weather manipulation? ha.

They are not sure.  Con Ed (and Verizon) have notified us that they have (today) lost power in their own buildings downtown.  They gave us the Sunday time line.

Crazy, the clouds have finally passed and now you can see the lake is brown from all the dirt churned up. It's very strange looking!

we're fine thx - i jear power will be back anywhere from manana to 9 days so we will see!

we r going to bake banana bread tonight just to fire up the oven.

very sad our friend's family totally lost their restaurants, 250 people out of work ugh.

Vodka with a twister as bar washes up on block

By KENNETH GARGER, DANA SAUCHELLI and RICH CALDER

Last Updated: 2:25 AM, November 6, 2012

The drinks were on Sandy!

A Brooklyn marina pub broke off from its main structure during the hurricane — and floated two miles before landing on a residential street, treating stunned residents there to its well-stocked bar for an after-storm bash.

“We had a big party. We had nothing else to do while we were waiting for everything else to dry, and this was a great opportunity to get our minds off everything,” said Michael Sarrell, 27, one of the Gerritsen Beach residents who took solace in the battered Gateway Marina bar that came to rest just outside their door.

The bar — which residents identified as a chunk of the marina establishment on federal parkland on Flatbush Avenue — had been lifted from its foundation in Mill Basin during Superstorm Sandy and drifted in swollen Deep Creek Bay, past the Belt Parkway, all the way west to the dead-end block at Madoc Avenue and Keen Court in Gerritsen Beach.

“It was moving 30 mph toward my house!” said Patrice Dolan, 52, who recalled screaming, “Oh, my God! What do I do? What do I do?” as the surreal moment played out.

When the bar hut came to a rest, residents discovered its tables and chairs were miraculously intact — as was a wide variety of booze.

It sounds like a lot of people on/near the Eastern Seaboard would be better off riding a bike right now, after being faced with this disaster.

bloggy sandy/moca related artworld news:

The reports about the fate of New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, the international home of the contemporary art world, started coming out shortly after Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast of the United States earlier this week.  Flood levels of several feet in many of the street level and below street level galleries had destroyed untold numbers of works of art, eradicated archives and ruined gallery infrastructure.  Magda Sawon, co-owner of Postmasters Gallery tweeted on Friday Nov. 2 about one of the artists she represents: “Diana Cooper’s Canal st storage under 5 feet. Major works 1996-2007 from her MOCA Cleveland show GONE.” She followed up later that day with this: “There is a large feature on Diana Cooper’s work scheduled for December Artnews. Many of the works illustrating the article no longer exist.” This horrific news was repeated about many other artists and galleries.

Odds are, if a Chelsea gallery had basement storage, the basement was flooded and works were either destroyed or a rushed to a conservator.

288 days of no snow - to end this weekend

"Cleveland's snowless stretch is longest in 85 years"

http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/12/clevelands_snowless_stretch_is.html

And a high wind advisory has just been issued for the are starting tomorrow afternoon through late night Friday morning

The Weather Channel icon on my phone has turned from blue to red. I click on it and see, in addition to the wind advisory, we also have a Winter Storm Watch for Friday and Saturday for potentially 6-10 inches of snow. I hope it doesn't escalate to a warning. I have to drive a friend from the Cleveland Amtrak station at 5:30 a.m. to Ravenna in a rear-wheel-drive, 200-hp car with racing slicks. Anyone got a Range Rover I can borrow??

I was going to point out that we've had snow already, but apparently they don't count dustings.

You sir, are an incredibly generous friend.

One of the best parts of being completely car free [and not having to commute in a suit] is having absolutely zero dread of snowstorms.

Based on tomorrow's weather forecast, my suggestions depend on your definition of "friend". If this is merely a good aquantence, give them directions to somewhere for breakfast, then tell them to take the PARTA bus from Tower City. If this is a good friend, meet them at 5:30 with a 6 pack and walk them to the bus (by the time they get down to Kent and then transfer to a bus into Ravenna in tomorrow mornings weather they should be sobered back up.) If this is someone that you have any intention of sleeping with, then suck it up and drive them but be careful.

I'm afraid I'm not so shallow, and that I follow through on my promises. My friend is from college whom I've known for 23 years. I tried to be there for him when his father died suddenly almost 20 years ago and when he lost his job and was in serious financial trouble about 10 years ago. He and I remain good friends, even though we live several hundred miles apart. BTW, he quit drinking before I did.

He also knows where to get the PARTA bus in Cleveland and more importantly when, which is not on Saturdays. He is a regular user of PARTA as he does not have a car. There is a possibility that the Sunday bus from Cleveland may not be operating either because KSU is on holiday break.

Only measurable snow "counts."

Oh, I can get way more obscure that broadcast television shows from the U.S.

I'm afraid I'm not so shallow, and that I follow through on my promises.

I suppose I should have pointed out that my suggestions were meant in jest. Drive safe.

I was supposed to go up to Cleveland today for a breakfast.  I was a chicken and turned around and came back.  Not ashamed to admit it.

You have chosen wisely

That small bit of snow? Pfft!

The snow wasn't/isn't the problem. it's all the idiot drivers that do not know how to drive in the snow.

Although it did not take me much longer than usual (I drive the opposite direction of rush hour), its took many people 4x their actual commute time this morning.

Tell you what, let's talk about a weather girl -- Indra Petersons. She was just hired by CNN from a TV station in LA, and I'm so glad. She is smoking hot! And she also was very knowledgeable in talking about the weather. I'm in love....

Could a 'Sharkicane' hit New York?

By NATALIE O’NEILL

This is no fish tale — Sharkicane could happen here!

If a raging hurricane were to strike New York City, it could suck up sharks and other sea creatures — triggering a Sharkicane, a horrifying real-life twist on the campy hit flick “Sharknado,” marine biologists warn.

“Hurricanes can carry huge volumes of water with them 20 or 30 feet over land — and whatever happens to be in that water does get transported along,” cautioned marine biologist Joe Yaiullo, of the Long Island Aquarium.

When is the Post just going to admit that it's the newspaper equivalent of Mad magazine? We read it not to be informed, but to satisfy our inner goofiness.

^ or look at it this way, now you will be just a little more prepared for a carpnado!

Staying Dry during Rain:

  • 1 month later...

Getting ready to move to the West side (Cleveland) wanted to know from those who have experience is the West side noticeably sunnier than the East Side? For those unfamiliar with Cleveland's unique weather dichotomy, the east side is directly in the path of moisture containing westerly winds which creates a snow/rain/fog belt along and east of the north east sloping coast. The west side is south of the lake and misses a lot of this precipitation/ cloudiness. Any thoughts would be welcomed.

I think the extra precipitation you are talking about applies more to the snow belt (parts of the east and south side) than the east side in general.... especially the City proper and inner ring.  I've never heard of it being cloudier on the east side.

^ Cleveland is more overcast than the towns south when there is a significant temp difference between the air and water. Not just in the winter. April through June, there have been times I've left downtown completely overcast to get clear skies by 480 or 82 heading South. Only to come home to the gray. It happens when I drive out to Solon for work too.

I don't know how far west you need to go to avoid it.

I agree! Driving from the zoo to University Circle will be sunny to cloudy at least 2 or 3 days a month.. It's especially pronounced in winter time. I've left home in sunshine and arrived at UC to a medium blizzard.

There is much variation.  When Mayfield Hts has 3 inches of snow, my neighborhood in the inner ring might have 1 inch and there will only be a slight dusting in Euclid.  I've noticed the overcast clear up as I head south towards Akron, but never heading west towards the airport.
