Not sure this is the exact correct place to post this but figured you guys would know.

Is there data available out there on how much rail traffic passes over CSX owned rail lines?

Im looking more specifically in the Indianapolis area since that is my area of study, but it has been difficult to locate anything on this topic.

Thanks

You might consider starting at whatever the local metropolitan planning authority (MPO) is in for Indianapolis.

They often have traffic counts and studies for various modes of transportation or would be able to point you in the right direction.

I have a contact at the MPO and sent her an email last week about this and she didnt email back. That is why I am here.

:)

Yeah, it didnt have exactly what I was looking for. It was helpful, but not what I needed.

I was looking more for what the MPO's do for road studies where they give a daily count or something like that. I know CSX being a privately held company those figures are probably a little more difficult to get, but was hoping someway that there was a way of getting them.

See Page 2 of this document:

It notes the east-west CSX Indianapolis Line through its namesake city handles about 30 million gross tons per year. There is an interesting rule of thumb here. The MGT number often approximates the number of freight trains per day (ie: a line with 30 MGT/year probably has about 30 trains per day on it). And I believe that CSX's Indianapolis Line does in fact carry about 30 freight trains per day. But this can vary by the length of trains and type of cargo commonly being carried.

Unfortunately, the CSX line between Indianapolis and Cincinnati (which also hosts Amtrak's Cardinal service) is not noted in the INDOT document. But my understanding is that CSX operates less than five daily trains over this route.

I hope this helps.

Its some help. There are a lot of lines that are around Indy that are owned by CSX, but dont really appear to be a creditble way to direct anything. Some of them even appear worn out when you look at them on google or bing maps. Doesnt mean they arent used...

that was helpful though kjp

thanks
