*** it looks like target field could be one of the best of the newer mlb stadiums ***

I love it (for now) but I'm afraid it will look quite dated in the future.  But I'm sure Twins fans are happy, which is all that matters.

i think you are right looks-wise, but at least it isn't some lame throwback style. in the end it will come down to the amenities, intangibles and the gameday experience for the fans. oh, and the weather too -- particularly in that part of the country! i wonder if they can still play some games in the metrodome when the weather is bad?

Certainly a different take on the stadium than the cookie cutter retro parks we've seen all last decade.

So long, Metrodome :)

the exterior looks like an airport terminal.

Thanks for the great pics.  I can appreciate the approach the Twins are taking with their new ballpark.  Traditional inside - modern outside.  But I'm kinda lukewarm on the exterior, though.  My biggest question with the new ballpark (and most baseball fans question too):  Is it wise to build an outdoor ballpark in Minnesota without a retractable roof?

i think you are right looks-wise, but at least it isn't some lame throwback style.

I totally agree.  I was relieved to see it wasn't the same old brick cliche.  It's why I like the Jake too :)

I really dislike how some many of the new ballparks have gimicky icons beyond the outfield walls. So many of these new stadiums have this disney-esque look to them.

and here I thought Gund / Quicken Loans Arena cornered the market on achieving the look of a spacecraft crash landing in the middle of a city

It does kinda look like a spaceship crashed into an upscale Target now that you mention it.

... Or perhaps Target is covertly building a Death Star like spacecraft that will one day traverse the country blowing up Walmarts.

It seems the Twins have developed a technology that allows them to build a stadium in 1992 and transport it to the future!

Awesome! Thanks for the pics! Still weird to see Delta signage in downtown Minneapolis...

There is a lot of history behind getting a new stadium for the Twins. From contraction to the current economy, it's lucky this thing got built.

I got blasted for this on SSP (lol), but I cannot stand this ballpark. I feel kind of wrong for even calling it a ballpark?

I think it's refreshing.  It's a nice break from the throwbacks.  The retro stadiums were nice early on, because alot more effort was invested into the details....think Comerica Park.  But by the mid 2000's, they were ugly precast arches and jumbo cornices.  This one appears to be made of stone panels, which puts about 75% of the new stadiums in the last decade to shame.

The only issue I see here is the roof.  The curvy form is very foreign to the rest of the structure which is much more angular.

This is Paul Brown Stadium masquerading as a baseball stadium...so I like it.  It is original and not another iteration of the Camden Yards style (not that those are bad).  But, wow.  Why not build this as an indoor stadium.  It must be the furthest north outdoory in pro sports.

lol -- my feelings exactly! but still i like it...and yes that is real sandstone.

those throwbacks, good god you cant be serious? i at least hope you have folded in the gameday experience into your liking them, which we cant know about this one yet nor imagine too easily given its still under construction and buried in snow.

wait, a 1992-esque target field is a throwback too - haha!

But, wow. Why not build this as an indoor stadium.

  • 4 weeks later...

I guess the inside of the TimberWolves area is nice, but the outside is really weird.

holy cow check this out:

joe mauer contract = $184m

twins target field = $152.4m (twins portion of the total cost)

so the twins paid more for the homeboy than they did for the ballpark he will play in!
