Jesse Owens.

Seems like whitewashing of history to me.  Instead of sweeping Allen under the rug, it would be more instructive to leave him in and explain that pro-slavery sentiment existed in the North as well as the South, and that it was even often expressed by people that we admire for other reasons.

The State is taking suggestions for whose statue should replace William Allen's in the US Capitol building.

Are people allowed to nominate themselves?

I was unaware that we were allowed to change.

A statue of Taft would probably take up too much space.

All Republicans, too. Kind of like a tax-supported political campaign in disguise. For that reason, I favor not changing things.

Paul Brown.

Impact in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati as well as his hometown.

Orville Wright (sorry Wilbur)

Rutherford B. Hayes of course!

Drew Carey of course! Or John Boenher, it would be life like because he is bronze® already!

John Glenn might be a good choice on a serious note. Astronaut and Senator.

Where can we find out who they've already used?  I'm sure the Wright Brothers have been used before, right?

Nope, Gov. Allen and Pres. Garfield were the original statues placed in the National Statuary Hall in 1887 by Ohio. For the complete list of current statues try http://www.aoc.gov/cc/art/nsh/

Neil Armstrong.  This one's obvious.

^Good idea, but he is still alive.

Robert Taft, one of America's five greatest senators according to JFK: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Taft

A powerful Senator sure, but I would hesitate to call him one of our greatest Ohioans.

Paul Newman?

Curtis LeMay.  Leader of the Berlin Airlift?

I'd personally say Paul Lawrence Dunbar or John Brown but as long as Horseface Taft doesn't go up, I'm all good.

Dunbar is good, I did a project on him in 3rd grade.  @diaspora I am working to get a petition together to get something about Mr. Newman in Shaker either at the High School or somewhere relevant.

P.L. Dunbar would be good, same with the Wrights.  I was holding back from listing all the worthy Daytonians because there are just so many.

COLUMBUS - The Wright brothers, Dayton’s aviation pioneers, and former Piqua congressman William McCulloch are among 10 finalists a legislative committee has selected for a statute to represent Ohio in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Orville and Wilbur Wright were considered as one entity by the committee, which announced its choices on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

why wouldn't William Howard Taft be nominated?  I mean, the only man to serve as both President and Chief Justice of the SCOTUS.  His dream job was to be on the SCOTUS and he really got screwed by his friend Teddy.

Merely guessing, but maybe because those nominated are not associated with any particular political affiliation?

Edit: never mind, realized after I posted that there were other politicians listed.

Maybe it's something as horribly non-controversial as that.

If i'm making the decision i'm going to make darn sure that the person i pick didn't accomplish their best work elsewhere.  I mean, what message does it send to say "sure, grow up here, but you don't get anything done here."

Maybe they should leave it alone until John Glenn or Neil Armstrong are eligible?

Thank you for putting that thought more tactfully than I was going to....

Raven Riley or Carmen Electra.

Going that route, Traci Lords.
