So exciting that Case is bucking the demographic trend of shrinking tradional college age people while at the same time increasing enrollment. I would love to know how they are  pulling that off. Is it hard work by individuals or the result of macro trends that Case is benifiting from? At any rate, it's great news because a great city needs a great university.

and is exciting how they are embracing their neighbors to the west such as with their new $300 million research buidling facing MLK and their recent crossover of E 105 into Hough with the Maltz Center (visually aided by the Doan remodel and Nord and Smith greenway projects.  The whole area is becoming one mega city within a city alomg with the Clinic and Circle Square.  Now if only UCI and the State of Ohio (with lobby help from the many powerful UC orgs) can relaunch the stalled efforts to encourage Cleveland's annex of East Cleveland.

What was his comments?

He lambasted Case (and Cleveland?) for not developing the area in the early 2000s and stoppped funding the local nonprofits for a few years.

He was also furious about the business school's building mismanagement and overurns.

Again at the bottom of the page??

CWRU’s South Residential expansion stops
By Ken Prendergast / September 28, 2024

As Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) approaches its 200th anniversary, just two years away, the growing college has just one megaproject on its syllabus for Cleveland’s University Circle — the $300 million Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building. So CWRU’s bicentennial legacy is to do what it has often done — prudently build when it needs to, not when it wants to. Even so, news of what the university is not building may come as a surprise.

major hissy fit cost Cleveland dearly in terms of his estate gifts...

True.

But my earlier point was that in this case, Cleveland and Case did respond to his anger and developments in University Circle started going in the right direction shortly thereafter. Frankly, the whole neighborhood has done quite well since, save for the law school.

Cleveland doesn't handle these situations well, from what I understand they angered John D. Rockefeller as well.

When it comes to what is now CWRU, they didn't anger Rockefeller as much as rebuffed his endowment offers because they felt it would overshadow the generosity and heavy lifting by Amasa Stone. Rockefeller then simply gave the money that he offered them and gave it to U of Chicago.

The city government however is a different story. Apparently, after he moved to NYC, the tax collectors saw him as a piggy bank and they were the hammer.

Yep the County and State of Ohio chased them past their deaths to tax as residents of Forest Hills during the summers - even delayed Mr and Mrs burials at Lakeview.

On my drive down Random Rd this morning I noticed a TurnDev banner on the warehouse/parking garage along the tracks. Is something brewing there?

We remember there were supposed to be townhomes/condos (1990's?) on the site of the Singer Steel building (the parking garage where the TurnDev sign is next to the new build condo mid-rise).

Little Italy’s Singer Steel has new owner
By Ken Prendergast / January 16, 2025

Passersby took note of a new sign that has gone up this week on the old Singer Steel building, 2100 Random Rd. in Cleveland’s Little Italy. The sign is for an active local developer named TurnDev of Beachwood, leading those passersby to wonder what’s next for the former industrial building that was turned into covered parking area.

I've heard that he was also insulted by the city siding with the parking lot people over Progressive when they were discussing moving downtown.

PBL was overall a pretty good guy but he was insistent things be done his way.....otherwise he'd move on quickly.

no, i wouldnt say a weedhead moves on quickly. 😂

iirc at the time both case and progressive tower were fairly protracted complaints and negotiations.

in the end he gave i think the majority of his money to the arts, particulary dia foundation.

Leaning laundromat of Little Italy demolition due
By Ken Prendergast / March 27, 2025

Italy has its famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Cleveland has its leaning laundromat of Little Italy. But while Pisa’s was built in 1372 and is in no danger of falling, Cleveland’s 19th-century version is a danger to surrounding buildings and may be demolished soon after five years of consideration.

It’s only recent use has been the addition of an ATM — effectively preventing its collapse.

Yikes, we had Ardyn's birthday party at Maxi's in October.

No big loss, the only thing architecturally interesting about that building is the lean.

I just don't want there to be an empty lot sitting there for years and years.  There is an example of this a few doors down at the Primo Vino site which has been crickets for way to long now, despite Landmarks approval and demo more than two years ago. Maybe going on three.

That's definitely a concern here

Maybe the building owner should lean into the lean, rename the building “Pisa”, and start advertising for lease. This is Little Italy, right?

Apparently it's owned by the owner of Maxi's and he's looking at expanding into that space.
