This is the final installment of my NYC Farewell Tour: a brief photo tour of my own neighborhood, or at least the nicer part of it. This is Manhattan's so-called Hudson Heights neighborhood, actually a sub-neighborhood of Washington Heights. These photos were taken in March 2008, a few months before the neighborhood would become my home. Most of these photos are of the upscale part of the neighborhood along Fort Washington Avenue; I live on Bennett Avenue at the bottom of the hill, facing the less-desirable part of the neighborhood along Broadway.

The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge: the George Washington Bridge and the Little Red Lighthouse. These became the subject of the 1942 classic children's book by Hildegarde Swift and Lynd Ward.

If all goes well, I'll be driving across this bridge around this time tomorrow in a Penske moving truck, on my way to Cincinnati.

Walking back from the George Washington Bridge, this half-sunken houseboat caught my eye.

187th Street. There's some great little bars and restaurants in this little business district.

Pinehurst Avenue. I love the beautiful art deco apartment buildings in this neighborhood.

187th Street, between Ft. Washington Avenue and Overlook Terrace. This reminds me a lot of my hometown of Cincinnati, where streets meet a steep hill and become stairs, and continue as streets again at the top of the hill.

I think the Hudson River's resemblance to the Ohio River in this area is what brought me to the neighborhood in the first place, and Fort Tryon Park reminds me a lot of Eden Park. Pretty soon I'll be able to enjoy the real thing.

And that concludes the NYC Farewell Tour. The Time-Warner guy will be along shortly to pick up my modem and cable TV box, so my only connection to the outside world will be my iPhone until I'm in Cincinnati.

Until next time...

Wow, beautiful area of NYC that I haven't seen much of.  Does look very similar to the Ohio River.

Edgecliff-ish.

You moved?  OMG!  Wow.  I hope everything turned out for the better as you mentioned you weren't exactly thrilled to be in NYC.

Wow....those apartment buildings!!!  A sea of apartments.  They remind me just a bit of the row upon row of art deco/moderne apts off Mass Avenue in DC, north of Rock Creek Park.

And yes, I can see the Hudson <---> Ohio thing, too.  Good call on that.

This looks like the kind of neighborhood Id love to live in.
