That photo highlights a weird landscape choice: I think those might be ginkgoes planted in the cafe terrace, or if not, some other tree species without much of a canopy spread. As someone still glowing from too much sun exposure walking around downtown this past weekend, not sure why they didn't choose something that would actually shade the seating within a few years.

Obviously Public Square is open yet but I hope the S&S Monument is better lit at night.  I recall a blue lighting hitting the top of the column in the past so I'm hoping there is at least a duplicate of that, even if it's not blue-lit.  Softer lighting of the base would be nice as well.

That photo from the Terminal Tower's Twitter account just proves that the design of that cafe was incredibly careless - an afterthought that was changed last minute.  All of those exposed mechanicals, exhaust pipes and Roof Top Units should have been hidden under a 100% green roof.  There would not have been any real cost difference and the $3 million from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District to improve water run off should have and could have funded this.  Inexcusable!

3231,Was this the planned art you had knowledge of for the backside of the cafe?

I am disappointed  that it is nothing more than an advertisement billboard rather than a curated public art installation.  Art was the concept given to the planning commission and the public for that space.  Did Land Studio approve this since they supposedly are in charge of what goes on that wall? I do not think any advertisement should be allowed to placed onto that wall even if it is a slogan for Public Square.

Regarding The Soldiers and Sailors Monument:  Half of the vintage acorn style lamp posts are not working around the monument.  It is odd that these haven't been fixed since it appears all the lighting is complete.  I too wish the shaft of the monument was lit more like the proposed rendering.

I just wish at this point somebody would give an actual date the park will reopen.  Tptb have not been very open with information. It is hard to see what is left to be done except the build out inside the cafe space and removal of the fencing/barricades.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- For decades, Public Square seemed more like a vacant lot than the bustling heart of the city. It's the place you walk through en route to some other destination.

No more, if all goes according to plan. Make that many plans – including Rebol. The 2,000-square-foot restaurant-bar is set to open on the southern edge of Public Square.

We're done discussing the roof of the cafe.  It's been beat to death on here already.

I heard that the soft opening of the square will be Friday (tomorrow)

Good news!  I hope next year's NBA championship can end here, so I can find my way on the roof of that cafe to see the action!

About the rink, what was the size of the rink the past 10 years?  Is it much different?

As for the site, the main point of these threads is to share valid, verifyable news about the subject of the thread.  Discussions of that news is also welcome, and everyone is free to express opinions, share thoughts, and ask questions.  Its generally understood that the questions asked on the site is a type of crowd-sourcing request for info, with the hope that someone reading would have the answer to the  question.  We have lots of experts on this forum who are very generous with their knowledge.

If the question is intended as a complaint, every once in a while that is OK, everyone needs to blow off steam when frustrated.  However if the complaints are  repetative, repetative, reptative, it can get a bit annoying, and it really serves no purpose.

Make your case, then move on.

(Also, this is a great example of a post that should be a private message, but this thread in particular tends to go off the rails in terms of complaining)

Looks like the soft opening is going on now (7:10pm) Thursday.

...off to the webcam!!!!

EDIT: Actually, that's the invite-only preview I mentioned upthread. There might be soft opening to the public before the official opening, but it's not tonight.

And the official opening will be a week from today.

Free opening ceremony planned for Public Square Thursday, June 30, at 11 a.m.

Lot's of other good info in there, including what sounds like really programming.

The water feature appears not to hold it's shape when turned on.

That looks like a drainage issue(testing?). Or the nature of the water feature is different from what I remember. It looks a bit too pond like.

(Edit: Cleveland Foundation put up a close up of the fountains. So, maybe just very reflective.

I noticed today that the back of Rebol has sign on it. "meet me at the square." It says and encourages selfies to be taken.

Public Square is now open to the public

Public Square is now open to the public

Riding past this morning it sure looked like they were about to open it! I'm going to walk over there soon. What a great week here in Cleveland!!

It is not open yet. The official opening is June 31 at 11:00am. However, they did have a preview last night for certain people. If you have snapchat follow @thisiscleveland and you can see some pretty cool views as they tour the square.

The entire fence was down this morning, but the cement barricades were still there. It seemed like anyone could access it. I was gonna ride my bike through it but got distracted. I'll try and head over there soon.

Public Square is now open to the public

And it is!!!

Awesome to look at the webcam and finally see people walking around in the square.  Lookin good!!!

Sounds like the whole meet you on the 9th at 9 trick.  In other words, there is no June 31st  :-o

Sorta... Cleveland Public Square posted on Facebook "PUBLIC SQUARE TO REOPEN ON JUNE 30" and that "While we understand excitement and anticipation for the new Public Square is high, the public re-dedication ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, June 30 at 11 a.m., at which time Public Square will be completely open for our community to enjoy. We look forward to welcoming Northeast Ohio residents at that time. While we encourage the community to enjoy views from around Public Square, we also ask that they respect this short period of site preparation so that all may enjoy our beautiful new Public Square beginning June 30."

So, "The fences are down but please don't come in until June 30"? Obviously that's not going to happen. Have the "grand opening" on June 30 but asking people to "respect this short period of site preparation" (whatever that means) seems like an odd request.

As I'm rereading that, I'm not sure if they're asking people to stay out or what message they were trying to convey with that post.

Yeah, have fun with that. There are tons of people out on it. What the %%%% did they expect? I'm going down around later this evening for sunset/blue hour shots.

^You better share those pics!  Ugh, I'm bummed I couldn't be there to walk the square when it still had that new square smell.

Oh, I guarantee it's covered in bum piss now. Or that's what half of cleveland.com commenters think.

Yeah, have fun with that. There are tons of people out on it. What the %%%% did they expect?

Probably the same staff member who thought the crowds were just gonna let LeBron's car through on Wednesday.

I just got back from PS.  It was surreal actually to be walking there... and the place was already full!  I saw tons of people taking photos, passing through, already saw families with kids, a baby playing in the grass... S&S Monument was full, it was just amazing!  (And only 1 bum  :-P :-D)  All kidding aside, I hope the square can be maintained as it is now because it is beautiful!

Side point I was on a walking tour with my family and grandma from California. She was absolutely amazed at the city's cleanliness and layout as well as architecture. She said the city planning here was incredible.

What's with the car parked on the busway in those photos? Can people park there?

What's with the car parked on the busway in those photos? Can people park there?

No.  There are still trucks parked there because workers are still finishing things up.

If you want to watch something nerve wracking, go onto the webcam and watch eastbound Superior cars and buses approach the Square and trying to turn right. Scary!

That picutre of the Moses Cleaveland statue reminds me of how the peace sculpture in Mall A is framed by the buildings behind it.

Not sure if that was intentional, but if it was, it was clever.

Looks great.  Now let's keep it from turning into a $50 million homeless camp.

Yeah, the bus-only lane implementation is a mess. On Ontario, it's the right-most lane that is for buses only which has its own signal. The buses turn right and then hop into the left-most lane around the Square. AFAIK, the auto lanes can turn right on red, which needs to be prohibited, because it can clearly conflict with the bus lane and signal. And what happens when traffic queues around the square?

I'm all for removing the Superior through-the-square route for buses, but it's a mess around the Square. I wish there was a better solution.

Buses routed around the Square seemed to be doing OK.  Close Superior to all bus traffic.  It's going to be closed for special events; why not just close it off now?

^^The right on red definitely needs to be killed, at least during the daytime. Wasn't as big an issue when the square was closed and the crosswalks to it empty. Similarly, drivers coming into the Square are going to need to learn not to block the crosswalks, even if means not entering the intersection when there's no room. Might take some enforcement to get the message across.

^ Agree!  The current traffic situation is not awful.  Looking at the webcam at all hours, the traffic is not that bad and it is empty on the weekends...thus the bus lane should certainly be closed on the weekends.

Already saw a guy on a mountain bike jump on to the concrete benches and wood benches and ride his bike on them with his pedals scratching the cement and wood.  No security in site to police the Square....why am I not surprised.  Chicago's Millennium Park is rife with Police and private park security and park workers to monitor behavior.  Public Square needs to curb this crap ASAP.

I thought you were all about saving taxpayers' money?

I have an opinion.

I think it's poorly suited to its lovely surroundings. and it didn't save taxpayer that much money.

Rebol at Public Square Unveils Concept and Menu

After more than a year of construction, much of it taking place behind the veil of fencing, Cleveland’s Public Square is gearing up for its big reveal. Even as the barriers come down, there’s still one more piece to the puzzle that remains to be put into place: the opening of Rebol, a café at the southern edge of the square.

Went down to the square tonight. I was blown away. Surprised at how much lower it sits in relation to the surrounding buildings. Feels very urban and borderline European.

Buses routed around the Square seemed to be doing OK.  Close Superior to all bus traffic.  It's going to be closed for special events; why not just close it off now?

It can be closed off; don't understand your statement.

The square is looking fantastic! I do get that "slightly European" comment someone made - perhaps the older quality of some of the buildings mixed in with the newer and the historical monuments all create some of that feeling... and though it didn't look packed in those great pics, it certainly seems like it's going to become a big draw for people.  I'm with the many that are asking - why the heck can't buses just keep going around the square? - it's not like this is Central Park and they have to go 10 or 20 blocks out of the way...it shouldn't even be an issue - I wouldn't be surprised to see that evolution in the near future.  I hope the water feature is fixed and we see that blue color in the southern side.. And yes, police presence there should be an ongoing, round-the-clock thing....just like some of the public spaces in NYC.. I do wish that there was more lawn green space in the square, but - can't have everything - overall, a critical, extremely well done addition for the city.  Looking forward to the official opening and seeing the media coverage of it...

KJP upthread cited the additional cost RTA claimed it would incur from having buses go around the square instead of thru, and it was nontrivial. I'm guessing that's what he means by saving taxpayer money and that's why buses will go through.

It's also nontrivial to have what looks like a gorgeous, unified public square bisected by loud 19-ton buses.

"Quick question - does anyone have an opinion about the roof of the cafe?"

Yes, should have been a green roof, as previously discussed on this thread.

I am very impressed with the signage that gives recognition to the very generous corporate donors.  These carved stone pavers are tastefully done with no intrusion into the aesthetic.  Great job!  This should silence all of the negative Clevelanders who were so concerned about this and who paint too broad of a negative brush against all corporate entities.  Without them, this park would not exist.  Kudos!!!

If anyone can post photos of these I would greatly appreciate it.  (I've only seen a few on other websites)

Routing all the buses that previously went through the square to around the square costs RTA hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. That's equal to running one bus route approximately 10 miles long with hourly service -- similar to those that have been cut recently. The Public Square renovation that RTA didn't seek didn't include any compensation to RTA. Instead RTA didn't protest  (much) because it didn't want to appear to be going against a civic project with lots of political support. So RTA took one for team, as it has many times before. But after too many times it becomes death by 1,000 cuts....

A city with transit bisecting a central square? Oh no!

^ Respectfully, how does having a bus stop moved just 25-50 yards add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars?  Is there an unbiased study on this.  There is no significant fuel usage increase nor man hour increase.

Consider as well the RTA cost related to the Square being closed off for special events.
