Second look this afternoon and I think you're right. Wishful thinking on my part I guess.

But where are the jersey barriers?

They are cool indeed. Every time we walked or drove past them last week there were kids spinning them around.

Lawn portion of the Square to be shut down once again until Spring.

Seems like suboptimal design to have a major portion of half the square totally off limits for what, 5 months of the year?

The grass needs to be protected because the designed layout did not take pedestrians' desired routes into effect.

Cincinnati does this too every year at Washington Park. Maybe there's some creative solution, like lining a "path" through the middle of the lawn with different-colored Astroturf?

Yes, again shows how the design was fundamentally flawed even apart from the bus lane issue.  The lawn simply can't handle the foot traffic of everyone cutting across.  Not surprisingly, people take the most direct route to get where they need to go.  The landscape architects really should have recognized that.  I would have much preferred a design more in the nature of Rittenhouse Square in Philly, which feels totally active throughout the year.

So I walked down this way to see if the drilling rigs were still on the Weston lots but they were already gone for the day. Here's a few pics of the Xmas decorations/ice rink and changes looking down Euclid (notice the May Company letters getting filled in up top)

What a waste of $50 million.

It also now serves as a swale for drainage too, which will save us millions in sewage repairs

I say just close Public Square to buses and let FTA try to sue.

The reflectiveness of 55 PS certainly brightens things up on such a cloudy, dreary day.

More reflective glass please!

I wish something would be done to the back of the Standard Building....Such a large canvas to do something cool.

How about a mural of the Chicago skyline?

I recently saw Public Square on an “honorable mention” list of the world’s best public squares. (It was not a Cleveland- centric website.) I don’t think any of the others had buses crossing through the middle. Sometimes, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Or you can’t be all things - you gotta pick your lane. Whatever phrase works. Not to relitigate the previous arguments from UO’s public square thread months ago  - I just don’t think Public Square can be a world-class pedestrian gathering place while being traversed by Jersey Barriers and buses.

At the least they could remove the Jersey barriers and install the black bollards they have elsewhere on the square.

At least put up some kind of decoration for the holidays, like a big wreath or candy cane.

You should spearhead a Terdolph Christmas extravaganza where everyone decorates the jersey barriers with Christmas wrapping paper and bows.

It certainly can't be "Crocker Park East," which is what they Mayor and his donors want it to be.

I just remember literally arguing with Sam Allard from Scene on twitter, since he wanted buses to be re-routed through the Square and I didn't... and the crux of his argument was that cutting off access through the Square was actually a form of systemic racism by lengthening the commute times of predominantly minority riders.

I just can't get on board with that: A) I used the bus at the time and it added - at most - 2 1/2 or 3 mins to my commute. and B) Public Square, especially in the summer is one of the few places in Cleveland where you can see families of every racial and ethnic group using and enjoying the space... that's limited greatly by an active roadway, imo.

The money that's been saved, plus the interest, on the Rosales' bridge could be used for the bus tunnel.

Doubtful. There's a ton of infrastructure down there that would have to be moved. That's more like a $250 million project.

This city should build a transit center on the land behind Tower City and have it connected to the rapid stations. You can probably re-route most of the buses that would traverse around Public Square which would probably eliminate some of the commuter traffic off of Ontario and in front of the Jack casino.

Makes sense.  It would be closer to the rapid station than Public Square.

I don’t know how anyone can blame Superior and the busses when, thanks to the Honorable Frank G Jackson, the square never got the chance to operate as designed.

The busway was supposed to be a seamless and complimentary addition to the square, but instead Frank decided to quite literally cut the square in half (and make it unnecessarily ugly with traffic paint plastered everywhere).

There is something deeply unsettling about watching buses going straight through while confused car drivers are boxed in & trying to figure out which lane to be in when approaching the Square.

Could the roadway be lowered even slightly and an artificial hill/incline be built over the road?

I'm envisioning the 'Wildlife Crossing' that's being constructed in Europe right now haha

That was one of the options when they were trying to plan this.

Well damn...i know it costs money but.....

Why was it rejected - too costly?

It's really not that hard, or unusual. This scene from Brussels is common across Europe....

Paint the bus-only thru-lane on Superior bright red, and make the DO NOT ENTER sign larger and/or add a NO CARS sign or something to deter folks.

Well I think one problem may be that traffic is pretty dense so that drivers might not even see the red pavement. And large signs would probably look like an eyesore. But the current situation is lousy (vs. what was supposed to be) and something needs to be done.

It didn't look as bad on the renderings.

Thanks for posting my tweet @KJP ?

I never had seen these until today and thought they were a great compromise between safety and aesthetics.

Hopefully something can be done on Public Square soon but it doesn’t seem to be a priority ...

Wishing a very unhappy birthday to the Public Square jersey barriers, as they were installed three years ago today.

How much longer until they finally fix this?

Maybe Mayor Jackson is working on a plan to have this section of Superior permanently closed.

Sadly I dont think it is a priority to anyone... Maybe with SW building their new headquarters on the square someone can come up with the money?

Well, it has directly prevented mass terrorist attacks on the Terminal Tower and BP building, so you can't say the barriers are ineffective.

^They've also kept the tigers away. Not had a single mauling on PS since installation.

Love the tweet in this string showing the cop car ignoring the cars illegally parked on Public Square
