Posted March 2, 201015 yr Even on a dead Sunday morning, Mobile became my favorite Alabama city... Now I'll grab the train to Montgomery..
March 2, 201015 yr My favorite too! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
March 2, 201015 yr Me Three! From what i recall that cathederal is one a square right in downtown, or on the very edge of it. Very neat city Mobile is! And I see they added another skyscraper, too (that pointy thang). If you take Government Street out of downtown you'd enter this world of tree shaded leafy neighborhoods....
March 2, 201015 yr Very nice Ink. There are some great districts here very similiar to the "French Quarter"
March 2, 201015 yr WOW! I never pictured Mobile to be quite like that. Quite impressive. Both with history and modern scrapers.
March 2, 201015 yr Very nice Ink. There are some great districts here very similiar to the "French Quarter" Mobile was founded by the French as the first capital of the colony of Louisiana. It moved to Biloxi, MS after like 20 years, but the influence is definitely visible. (Cue Mayday's "the more you know" graphic :-P)
March 2, 201015 yr Mobile's pretty small-time, like a big Lima. The part that looks like the French Quarter is pretty chopped up by mediocre newer buildings. There is a little road tunnel under the harbor and an ugly cable stayed bridge. It's one of those places that doesn't have anything truly excellent.
March 3, 201015 yr ^^ Hmm..a big Lima? No, I dont think so. Dayton is a big Lima. Mobile is something other than that...not truley outstanding but not the empty asphalt wasteland, either, due to the scale of those streets
March 3, 201015 yr Nice! Don't get to see much Mobile, AL on these forums aside from the occasional skyline shot. Huntsville is supposed to be the more progressive and economically viable city in Alabama, right?
March 6, 201015 yr I've been to Mobile several times including Mardi Gras (and as any proud resident will tell, they celebrated before New Orleans) In fact, it's one of the oldest cities in the U.S. You can see some nice history, as well as mid century stuff there. The newish tall tower is nice, but the scale of size is awkward. And I couldn't believe when I saw that the owner (apparently the owner) who also owns a large downtown hotel adjacent to the convention center, put the same crown on the hotel. It looks awful. It can be said that so many cities have potential and many do, but Mobile really does. It's a decent small (midsize small) port city with history and could be more of a destination like other old port towns.
